Tucson Sugar Skulls News Release

The Tucson Sugar Skulls clinched their spot in the 2023 IFL Playoffs with a road victory over the Duke City Gladiators last weekend.

They are now set to host the Green Bay Blizzard in what will be their final regular season game of the season on Saturday night in the Boneyard. Tucson is looking to solidify its spot near the top of the West and lock in the third seed with a victory.

Blizzard in the Desert

This will be the first time the Green Bay Blizzard have played in Tucson. It will be the second meeting all-time between the teams, with Tucson dropping a close one in Wisconsin by a score of 42-36. That game was in May of 2021 back in the Sugar Skulls' second season of action.

Green Bay just got eliminated from playoff contention last week after a tough 47-39 loss to Quad City to drop them to 7-7 on the season. While they (Green Bay) essentially have nothing to play for in terms of playoff aspirations, they are looking to finish the season with a winning record and potentially play the spoiler to drop Tucson a spot in the Western Conference playoff standings.

Tucson Tuff

The Sugar Skulls not only clinched their spot in the playoffs for the third time in four seasons of operation, but they won their 30th game in franchise history in the process last week.

Tucson has been on fire on the road this season, recording six of their eight wins while traveling. That puts them at a 6-1 road record on the season with their final road game being at Duke City last Saturday night.

At home, it's been a struggle for the Skulls. They are just 2-5 in the seven home games they've played this season, including a double-OT heartbreaking loss and a loss by two-points to Bay Area.

A win would give Tucson their ninth overall victory of the season, which would tie a franchise record that was set last season. That was in a 16-game season where they finished 9-7 in the regular season. A 9-6 finish would be the highest win percentage the Skulls have had.

Playoff Path?

The opponent for Tucson will be decided after this weekend, as it will come down to the final game of the season before the 1-4 seeds are settled and locked in. If the season ended today, they'd be facing the Bay Area Panthers in round one, traveling to San Jose.
