Tryout Pays Off For Burke
April 29, 2009 - Frontier League (FL)
Florence Y'alls News Release
Florence, KY - Many tried, but only one made it through with a signed contract to play for the Florence Freedom this season.
Bryan Burke, an outfielder from Lindenhurst, New York, was one of the 55 players to tryout for the Freedom last Saturday. Burke was the only one to be currently offered a contract to report to spring training.
"I've seen this guy play and I like him," Freedom Manager Toby Rumfield said. "He's put himself out there about as much as any one player can. I saw him play when I went down to Florida for a showcase earlier this spring and invited him to the tryout. I liked what I saw last weekend so I signed him."
Burke played in the Independent Continental League last season with the Texarkana Gunslingers and hit .284. He ended his college career by hitting .383 at Division III Kean University in 2008.
Rumfield will also add players following the Frontier League tryout taking place in Washington, Pennsylvania on May 4 and 5 at Consol Energy Park.
The Freedom open their regular season on May 20 at 11:05 a.m. against the Midwest Sliders, for tickets call the Champion Window Field Box Office at (859) 594-HITS.
