Southern Illinois Miners News Release

MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners have signed catcher Brandon Ketron.

Ketron, 25, began his professional career with the Washington Wild Things in 2006. In 203 at bats, he hit .330 with 11 doubles, four triples, five home runs with 32 runs batted in. He carried a .409 on base percentage. Defensively, Ketron was among the league's best catchers, throwing out opposing base runners at a .372 clip.

Late in the 2006 season the Yankees organization signed Ketron and assigned him to their Gulf Coast League rookie club. He spent the 2007 season splitting time between the Yankees affiliates in Staten Island Yankees (New York-Penn League) and Charleston RiverDogs (South Atlantic League) before his release in spring training in 2008. Ketron spent the 2008 season with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the Atlantic League. In 151 at bats in a backup role, he hit .199 with three doubles and three home runs.

"We have been looking for just the right catcher to come in to replace Brendan Akashian," Miners Manager Mike Pinto said. "I believe Ketron to be that guy. He has had success in this league as both a hitter and receiver. He caught last year in the Atlantic League and worked with a number of major league pitchers. That experience will only make him better for us this season and give us an experienced guy behind the dish."

The Miners will begin the regular season in Evansville on Friday, May 22. The home opener is scheduled for Friday, May 29 at 7:05 p.m. For the latest news and updates, visit www.southernillinoisminers.com.
