Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The Colorado Rockies announced today that All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and speedster Dexter Fowler will begin rehabilitation assignments with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox starting tomorrow, Monday, July 8. Both Major Leaguers are scheduled to play for the Sky Sox against the Sacramento River Cats (Triple-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics) in the team's 7:05 PM start at Security Service Field. The length of their assignment with the Sky Sox will be determined by a day-to-day evaluation. The Sox are in the midst of their longest home stand of the season with home games schedule through July 14. Tulowitzki has been on the disabled list since June 14 with a fractured rib on his right side and Fowler is on the mend from a right hand bone bruise and has been on the disabled list since June 26.
Tulowitzki, 28, was named the starting shortstop in the 2013 All-Star game after being the runaway winner in the fan vote at his position. It's his third All-Star selection in the past four seasons and he'll play in the Fall Classic if he's able to return to regular-season play before the game. This will be his fifth appearance as a member of the Sky Sox. The talented young shortstop originally skipped the Triple-A Sky Sox all together in 2007 when he won the starting shortstop job with the Rockies. He went on to hit .291 (177-for-609) with 24 homers and 99 RBI as he finished second in the National League Rookie of the Year Award and helped the Rockies reach their first ever World Series.
In 2008, Tulowitzki suffered a left quadriceps tendon tear and rehabbed with the Sky Sox in June of that year. During that two game stint, Tulowitzki hit .429 (3-for-7) with a double, two runs scored and a RBI. In 2010, a fractured left hand sent the shortstop to the Sky Sox on rehab and he hit .250 (1-for-4) with a run scored and a walk in two games. Last season, Tulowitzki made two separate appearances with the Sox on rehab assignments for a groin injury. His first attempt in June was cut short after he aggravated his injury while running the bases. In that game, he hit a two-run home run in his first at bat and a single in his second before coming out of the game. The shortstop returned to the Sky Sox for his second rehab stint in late August and played in five games hitting .267 (4-for-15) with a homer and a double before ending his season.
Fowler, 26, will be starting his third stint in a Sky Sox uniform as he previously played for Colorado Springs in 2010 & 2011. After originally skipping the Sky Sox in 2008, Fowler was optioned down in 2010 and played in 27 games with the Sox hitting .340 (36-for-106) with two homers, four triples and 10 doubles. He was optioned down again in 2011 and hit .237 (23-for-97) in 24 games with two homers, a triple and six doubles.
In his career, Fowler leads the Rockies all-time in games played in center field (575) and triples (52). He was the starting center fielder during the 2008 All-Star Futures Game at Yankee Stadium and won a bronze medal as a member of Team USA at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
