Iowa Cubs News Release
Albuquerque, NM - The Iowa Cubs (45-45) lost 10-3 in the completion of last night's rain suspended game and 1-0 in tonight's regularly scheduled game to the Albuquerque Isotopes (50-40) at Isotopes Park. The Isotopes lead this series 2-1 and lead the season series 8-3.
The Cubs led 1-0, but the Isotopes were batting with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the second inning when play resumed today. John Baker greeted Esmailin Caridad with a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game before Caridad got out of the inning and stranded the other two runners. The 'Topes added single runs against Caridad (3-4) in the third and the fourth and never trailed again.
Jeff Antigua gave up a solo homer to Alex Castellanos among two runs in the fifth. The 'Topes added two runs against Marcus Hatley in the seventh and three against Eduardo Sanchez in the eighth. The rally ended Sanchez' streak of 12.1 consecutive scoreless innings. Castellanos led the 'Topes with three hits, adding two doubles to his homer, and scored three times. Matt Angle had three doubles and scored twice while Rusty Ryal had three hits, including a double, two RBI, and scored two runs to pace the 'Topes on offense.
Sean White (3-4) picked up the action in the top of the third on the mound for Albuquerque and worked three scoreless innings for the win despite throwing 30 balls and 29 strikes in 59 pitches. Anthony Ortega allowed a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Logan Watkins. Kevin De La Cruz finished the final three innings and earned his sixth save. Darnell McDonald finished 1-for-4, but had an RBI and scored twice to have a hand in all of the Cubs' runs. Watkins finished with two hits and drew a walk.
Barret Loux (4-3) pitched his first career complete game, but lost in game two. He allowed one run on four hits, walked four, and struck out six in six innings. The 'Topes scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, former Cub Ian Stewart - playing in his first game with Albuquerque - doubled down the left field line, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryal.
'Topes' starter Angel Castro (5-2) allowed four hits and three walks while striking out two in five innings for the win. Red Patterson worked the sixth inning and Javy Guerra finished the seventh to earn his second save.
The Cubs have been shut out nine times this season. This was the first time the Cubs have ever been shut out at Isotopes Park. The last time the Cubs were blanked in Albuquerque was a 3-0 loss to the Albuquerque Dukes on July 24, 1999. Memphis has won their last two games, cutting the Cubs' lead in the American Northern Division down to two games.
The Cubs and Isotopes complete this series at Isotopes Park tomorrow night at 7:05 Central time. It will be the Cubs' last game in Albuquerque during the regular season. RH Guillermo Moscoso (5-5, 4.63) is scheduled to pitch for the Cubs against LH Rob Rasmussen (0-2, 2.77) for the 'Topes. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940, and streamed live at iowacubs.com, with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
