Brampton Steelheads News Release

The Steelheads fell to the Kitchener Rangers by a score 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Memorial Auditorium. Goals from Nick Isaacson and Richard Whittaker would be outdone by five markers from the Rangers top scorers.

Sunday's first period got off to a rocky start for the Trout. Jacob Ingham stood tall on a couple of early chances including spreading out wide to collect a puck during a scrum in front of the net but the Rangers would eventually breakthrough thanks to Rickard Hugg. The forward slotted a rebound past the netminder for his 29th of the season to open the scoring, the marker would come just three minutes and six seconds into the game. The Trout would, however, rebound minutes later when Alan Lyszczarczyk received a pass from Liam Ham and entered Kitchener's zone with speed. The forward turned-up the boards to create space from his defender and then laid off a nifty backhand feed to Richard Whittaker. The former London Knight took the puck hard to the net, beating Luke Richardson low blocker side to cut the Rangers lead in half. The Steelheads would gain a foothold in the game in the middle section of the period. Both sides earned power plays that failed to generate any real chances and the teams looked like they would be headed to the intermission tied at one. Reid Valade had other ideas, the Kitchener forward received a pass in the offensive zone and then dished an inch-perfect backhand assist to Joseph Gareffa. Gareffa perfectly placed his shot beating Jacob Ingham on his glove side with only 2:23 remaining in the opening period.

The Steelheads would endure a tough start to the second period. Nick Isaacson's high-sticking penalty would give the Rangers a power play eight minutes into the frame. On the man-advantage, it would take Jonathan Yantsis only nine seconds to extend the Rangers lead to three. A quickly worked play with Riley Damiani and Greg Meireles would ultimately, be the game-winner in the contest. Thomas Harley came close to an equalizer the defenceman showed of his stick-handling on a nice toe drag around a Kitchener defender to get into a high-danger area, but his effort on goal was turned aside by Luke Richardson. The Rangers would find another goal later in the period through their leading scorer Meireles, his 31st of the year gave the Rangers a 4-1 lead. The Trout would then find a late goal by Nick Isaacson to keep this one interesting, a rocket of a shot past Richardson cut the lead to only 2. Isaacson fooled Richardson with a glance over to a streaking Steelhead on the 2-on-1 before dispatching his 12th of the season into the top corner. The Steelheads would then flash a glimmer of a comeback as they drew a late penalty that would see them start the third on the power play.

On the man-advantage to start the final frame Cole Carter would come closest to making it a one-goal game. His chance at the side of the net was first denied by Richardson and then by a Rangers defenceman who hugged the post to cover for his goalie who was drawn out of the crease. The Steelheads would push hard for a comeback, firing 10 shots on Luke Richardson compared to only six on Ingham by the Rangers in the final frame. Unfortunately for the Steelheads, Joseph Garreffa's goal with 7:16 remaining put the game out of reach for the Trout and the Rangers would run out winners by a final score of 5-2.

Some notes from the game; Richard Whittaker's goal today and Friday night against Oshawa marked the first time the forward has scored goals in back-to-back games. Liam Ham and Ryan Wells both recorded their first career assists against the Kitchener Rangers.

The Steelheads will get a shot at redemption against the Rangers on Wednesday in front of a raucous, rambunctious school day crowd at 11:00 am.
