North Bay Battalion News Release
LONDON, Ont. - The North Bay Battalion had nothing but Justin Brazeau's franchise-record 51st goal of the season to celebrate in an 8-1 loss Sunday to the London Knights.
Brazeau tied the Ontario Hockey League game 1-1 in the first period to surpass Mike Amadio's record of 50 goals in 2015-16 but, other than that, it was all Knights all day.
Kevin Hancock scored one goal and added three assists, and Liam Foudy and Connor McMichael each provided one goal and one assist. Antonio Stranges, Evan Bouchard, Alex Formenton, Josh Nelson and Billy Moskal scored a goal apiece for London, which got 22 saves and an assist from goaltender Joseph Raaymakers.
London, which boasts a won-lost-extended record of 41-11-7 for 89 points atop the Midwest Division and the Western Conference, is 26-3-2 at Budweiser Gardens, where a crowd of 9,008 viewed the action.
Goaltender Christian Purboo faced 51 shots for North Bay, which completed a road trip of three games in as many days and is 26-28-5 for 57 points, fourth in the Central Division and tied for seventh in the Eastern Conference with the Peterborough Petes, who downed the visiting Kingston Frontenacs 4-1. The Battalion defeated the Windsor Spitfires 4-3 in overtime Saturday night after losing 6-2 Friday night to the Sarnia Sting.
Stranges opened the scoring at 8:06 of the first period, redirecting the puck from the slot after Paul Cotter fed it in front off a rush deep down the left wing.
Brazeau responded with the Battalion skating four-on-three at 13:34, drilling the puck from the left-wing circle high over Raaymakers's glove to the top right corner. Nick King and Luke Burghardt had the assists.
Hancock connected on the power play at 19:31, knocking the puck into the net after it found its way through traffic to the left part of the crease. It was the 48th goal for Hancock and his 17th since a trade from the Owen Sound Attack.
London erupted for four second-period goals to take command, sparked by defenceman Bouchard's unassisted tally off a rush at 5:48.
Formenton scored with the man advantage at 10:35, knocking the puck home after Purboo sent it flying into the air off a right-point drive by Adam Boqvist, who had two assists.
Nelson took a breakaway pass from Cole Tymkin, the second assist credited to Raaymakers, and scored at 11:47 before Foudy collected his 32nd goal at 13:30, one-timing a pass from the left corner from McMichael. Hancock drew the other assist.
After the Knights killed a crosschecking penalty to William Lochead, McMichael netted his team-leading 35th goal at 4:30 of the third period, and Moskal scored his 13th at 13:04, tipping Joey Keane's right-point lob.
The Battalion plays host to Owen Sound at 7 p.m. Thursday on Bumper to Bumper Night.
