February 24, 2019 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Owen Sound Attack News Release
The Attack hit the ice at the Bayshore earlier this afternoon to meet the Central division leading Niagara IceDogs in a matinee tilt. The IceDogs came into the meeting as the highest scoring team in the OHL, having put up 15 goals in their previous two games.
Owen Sound would have the earliest chance of the game after Barret Kirwin was fouled on a breakaway, but he couldn't convert on the following penalty shot. Kirill Maksimov would score the opening goal of the game at 12:42 of the 1st period, but the Attack would continue to put the pressure on IceDogs goaltender Stephen Dhillon. The first period would end 1-0 in favour of Niagara, but the shots were even at 9 apiece.
Starting in the 2nd, Niagara began to show why they lead the Ontario Hockey League in goals. Ben Jones scored his 35th and 36th of the season to begin the period, Jack Studnicka notched #28 just past the halfway mark of the frame and suddenly the Attack trailed 4-0. Matt Brassard would add another before the end and Niagara would lead 5-0 heading to the 3rd.
The 3rd period began in Niagara's favour. They started the final 20 on a power play, and Akil Thomas put one past Andrew MacLean in his first taste of action this weekend. The IceDogs showed no signs of slowing down and extended the lead to 8-0 late in the third period after a pair of quick goals. Niagara added a final tally to take the 9-0 victory at the Bayshore. Shots on goal ended 42-21 for the IceDogs.
The Hatten Home Building Centre Hardest Working Player of the Game was Bryce Caruk. The Mac Taylor Corporation Three Stars were Stephen Dhillon, Matt Brassard and Ben Jones.
The Owen Sound Attack will now head on the road for five straight games, beginning in North Bay next Thursday. The Attack will return home on Saturday, March 9th for a game against the Guelph Storm.
