Indianapolis Indians News Release

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Right-hander John Van Benschoten hurled five scoreless innings for his first victory of the season and Indianapolis rolled to its third straight win -- a 5-1 decision -- over Pawtucket Wednesday night at McCoy Stadium.

The Indians improve to 15-9 overall and 9-3 on the road, while the Red Sox fall to 9-14 overall and 2-11 at home.

Van Benschoten (5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 SO) improved his record to 1-2 and lowered his ERA to 2.45, while SS Brian Bixler and 2B Luis Ordaz both extended their hitting streaks. Bixler finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and has now hit safely in nine straight games, while Ordaz went 1-for-4 and has now hit safely in eight consecutive tilts.

Indianapolis struck first with two runs in its first at-bat. LF Rajai Davis walked, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. RF Chris Aguila then brought Davis plateward with a single to center before 3B Jose Hernandez (3-for-4, 2 R, 1 RBI) scored Aguila with a double to right.

Davis stole two more bases in the third to take over the International League lead with 15 thefts. The 26-year-old has been caught stealing just five times this season.

1B Yurendell de Caster smashed his second home run of the season -- a solo shot to left center -- in the fifth to put the Tribe on top, 3-0.

The Indians added to their advantage with one run in the sixth and another in the eighth. Hernandez scored on a Bixler single in both innings.

The Red Sox scored their lone run in the sixth when DH Luis Jimenez brought RF Brandon Moss plateward with a single to left.

Pawtucket LHP Jon Lester (3.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO) suffered the loss in his first decision of the year. Lester, who was diagnosed with anaplastic large cell lymphoma in 2006, was making his second rehab start of the year. The 23-year-old posted a 7-2 record and 4.76 ERA in 15 starts for Boston a season ago.

Indianapolis and Pawtucket continue their four-game set at McCoy Stadium on Thursday at 12:15 p.m. Indians RHP Marty McLeary is scheduled to face Red Sox RHP David Pauley.

The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 11:55 a.m.
