Tides win 4-1 over the Durham Bulls
May 2, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Mike Cervenak and Jon Knott each homered during a four-run first inning, lifting the Tides to a 4-1 win over the Durham Buls in a rain-shortened game Wednesday night.
Norfolk entered the contest with just one home run through its first nine home games, but doubled that amount just six batters into the game. Cesar Crespo led off the frame with a bunt single, and came around to score one batter later on an RBI single by J.R. House. Cervenak then lined a 2-2 offering from J.P. Howell (1-4) into the left field picnic area, putting the Tides up 3-0. One batter later, Knott lofted a solo home run over the left field wall to give the Tides a 4-0 lead.
After Norfolk's first inning outburst, Howell immediately settled down, retiring 16 straight batters and 19 of the next 20. Norfolk's lone hit over that span was a double to right field in the 7th inning of the bat of Jason Dubois.
The four runs were more than enough for Tides' starter Jon Leicester (1-2), who picked up his first win of the season after allowing one run on six hits in 6.0 innings. Leicester struck out a season-high seven in the contest and did not walk a batter.
Durham scored their only run on an RBI single by former Oriole Chris Richard in the 4th inning.
The game was called due to heavy rains in the top of the 8th inning.
Norfolk and Durham will square off again on Thursday afternoon, with right-hander Tim Kester (1-1, 2.86) scheduled to throw for the Tides against Durham righty Jeff Niemann (1-1, 3.60). First pitch is set for 12:15 p.m.
