Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Tribe offense scored in each of the first five innings as eight of nine Indianapolis batters scored at least one run, seven collected at least one hit and six drove in at least one run to power the Indians to a 10-4 victory over the Toledo Mud Hens on Tuesday night at Victory Field.

With the win Indianapolis improves to 44-43 on the season, while the loss drops Toledo's record to 35-52. The victory for the Indians also evens the current five-game home/road series at 2-2 and the overall season series at 5-5.

After scoring just one run in each of their last two games, the Indians offense exploded for 10 runs on 13 hits, while scoring multiple runs in four separate innings. The Tribe spread the wealth offensively as the first eight hitters all scored at least one run and reached base at least once.

Major Leaguer Pedro Alvarez started the scoring for the Tribe when he ripped a single to right field to plate 2B Corey Wimberly and SS Jordy Mercer, who led off the bottom of the first with a double and hit by pitch respectively. The duo of RF Miles Durham and DH Dusty Brown then extended the Indians advantage to 3-0 when they led off the bottom of the second with a triple and double back-to-back.

Alvarez then began the Tribe's three-run third inning outburst with a walk, before moving to third on a double by Indians All-Star Matt Hague and coming plateward along with Hague on a single by C Kris Watts. The two RBI for Watts were the first two in his Triple-A career in what was his 10th game with Indianapolis this season.

Watts would also come around to score a run, as Brown completed the scoring in the third by lifting a sacrifice fly to extend the Indians lead to 6-0. The RBI for Brown was his first since May 28, in what his first game for the Tribe since being outrighted from Pittsburgh on July 2.

Toledo would cut into the deficit with single scores in the fourth and fifth on a solo home run by Major Leaguer Carlos Guillen and sacrifice fly by former Indians INF Argenis Diaz. The longball for Guillen was the first with Toledo since joining them on a Major League rehab assignment on July 1.

However, the Indians would tack on two more tallies in their half of the fourth and fifth to put the game well out of contention. LF John Bowker blasted two more scores on the board in the fourth, when he launched a two-run home run over the right field fence. The blast for Bowker continued a recent power surge, as the left handed slugger has now belted five home runs and driven in 12 over his last 10 games.

The Indians then pushed their way into double digits, as both Watts and Brown both capped their nights with runs in the bottom of the fifth. Watts led off the frame with a single and moved up to third on Brown's second double of the night, before a sacrifice fly from CF Anthony Norman and RBI single from 2B Corey Wimberly extended the Indians advantage to 10-2.

Wimberly (3-for-5, 2 R, 1 RBI) sparked the Indians from the lead-off spot as he collected three hits and scored two runs, while Brown (3-for-3, 1 R, 2 RBI) made a triumphant return with a perfect 3-for-3 effort at the plate. Watts (2-for-5, 2 R, 2 RBI) also had a break out night for the Tribe as he tallied two hits, two runs and two RBI, while Bowker (2-for-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI) blasted his way to a multi-hit and multiple-RBI effort as well.

Indianapolis starter Garrett Olson (6.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO) turned in another solid performance, as he allowed just two runs over six innings of work to earn the victory and improve to 3-0 on the season. Following Olson, Tribe relievers Mike Crotta (1.0 IP) and Jose Ascanio (1.0 IP, 1 BB) each tossed hitless innings of relief, while reliever Tim Wood (1.0 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO) served up two Toledo ninth inning scores off a double by RF Ben Guez and sacrifice fly from DH Cale Iorg.

Mud Hens starter L. J. Gagnier (4.2 IP, 11 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) was roughed up for 10 runs (nine earned) on 11 hits over just 4.2 innings, suffering the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season. Following Gagnier, Toledo relievers Enrique Gonzalez (2.1 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 SO) and Matt Hoffman (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) worked out of jams to combine for 3.1 frames of scoreless relief.

Indianapolis now wraps up the three-game home series with Toledo on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. LHP Rudy Owens is expected to take the mound for the Indians, while the Mud Hens are scheduled to counter with LHP Duane Below.

The contest will be carried on WNDE 1260 AM, WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones, while also being broadcast live on Comcast and Bright House Networks digital channel 81 with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley on the call. (on the Tribe's 10-run performance) "I think we just a had a good day with runners in scoring position. We got it done when we had guys on third with less than two outs. Overall it was just a good day for the Indians."

(on Indians' RF Miles Durham's sliding catch) "It was one of the most amazing catches I've seen all year. He was full speed all the way. It was just an amazing catch. The view I had I saw him come in out of nowhere and he made an unbelievable play."
