Indianapolis Indians News Release
DURHAM, N.C. -- Third baseman Joel Guzman tagged an RBI double and catcher Michel Hernandez roped a solo home run, while right-hander Jae Kuk Ryu struck out seven over five innings as Durham edged Indianapolis, 2-1, in front of 9,440 Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The Bulls improve to 34-34 on the season and 17-16 at home, while the Indians fall to 39-27 overall and 18-14 on the road. Saturday will be the Tribe's 61st consecutive day atop the International League's West Division.
Ryu (5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 SO), who faced just four batters over the minimum, improved to 1-0 in his third Triple-A start of 2007.
Durham grabbed an early advantage in the opening frame when DH Justin Ruggiano (1-for-3, 1 R) took a two-out walk and scored on Guzman's (3-for-4, 1 RBI) double to right.
The Bulls added a run in the third when Hernandez (1-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI) smacked his first roundtripper of the season over the center-field wall, making it 2-0.
Indianapolis did not see more than four batters step up to the plate until the fifth. DH Russ Johnson led off with a single to center, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on LF Chris Aguila's groundout and scored on C Einar Diaz's (1-for-3, 1 RBI) seventh double of the year.
LHP Jeff Ridgway (2.0 IP, 1 H, 4 SO) and RHP Seth McClung (1.0 IP) worked the middle innings for Durham, while RHP Chad Orvella (1.0 IP, 2 SO) entered in the ninth for his sixth save of the campaign.
Indians LHP Michael Tejera (5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 SO) fell to 3-1 with the loss in his fifth start of the season.
Indianapolis continues its four-game series at Durham on Saturday at 7 p.m. LHP Shane Youman is slated to start for the Indians, while RHP Mitch Talbot is expected to get the nod for the Bulls.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
