Norfolk Tides News Release
Buffalo's Ben Francisco doubled home the go-ahead run in the top of the 8th inning, lifting the Bisons to a 5-4 win over the Tides in front of 8,651 fans at Harbor Park on Friday night.
With two outs and the score tied at 4-4 in the 8th, Bisons centerfielder Jonathan Van Every started the decisive rally with a triple off the left field wall off of Norfolk reliever Francis Beltran (1-6). Francisco then followed with a line drive double down the left field line, plating Van Every and giving the Bisons a 5-4 lead.
The Tides put the tying run on first base in the 8th and 9th innings, but could not score against the Bisons bullpen as Norfolk saw its winning streak snapped at three. Edward Mujica picked up the save for Buffalo, retiring the final three batters of the contest.
Buffalo jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning, as Van Every lined a home run over the left field wall off of Tides' starter Jim Johnson.
Norfolk responded quickly in the bottom of the 3rd, plating runs on a bases loaded walk to Eider Torres and a two-run single by Mike Cervenak.
The Bisons tied the game in the 6th inning on a two-run home run by Jason Cooper, then took the lead with two outs in the inning on a fielding error by Cesar Crespo.
Norfolk bounced back quickly once again, tying the contest in the bottom of the 6th inning on a home run into left center field by Jon Knott. It was the second straight night in which Knott clubbed a home run, and it gave him a team-leading seven long balls on the season.
Tides' starter Jim Johnson allowed four runs - three earned - in six innings pitched, walking three and striking out six.
Norfolk and Buffalo continue their four-game series with a 7:15 contest Saturday night from Harbor Park. Rob Bell (4-2, 2.87) is set to take the hill for Norfolk against Bisons right-hander Jeff Harris (2-, 5.69).
