Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Aberdeen, MD - The Aberdeen IronBirds, Class A-Short Season affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, announced today that Trey Mancini has been named the IronBirds Most Valuable Player for the 2013 season.
Mancini, drafted by the Orioles in the 8th round of the 2013 draft out of the University of Notre Dame, has led the IronBirds in nearly every statistical category for most of the season.
Entering play on September 4th, Mancini has played in 67 of the team's 71 games, playing 59 of them at first base. He is batting .324, on pace to set the franchise record for highest batting average in a single season. He has collected 82 hits, one shy of the franchise record. He also leads the team with 253 at-bats, 18 doubles, and a .379 on-base percentage.
Mancini joined the IronBirds on June 19th for the third game of the season, and hit a two RBI single that evening. He collected his first professional home run on July 2nd in Hudson Valley, and the next night became only the fifth IronBirds player to have five hits in a game. He also leads the team with 24 multi-hit games.
"Trey has been our most consistent bat in the lineup and his presence at first base has really solidified our infield," said IronBirds' Manager Matt Merullo. "It has been a real pleasure to watch him grow this season, as he has helped lead our team to a division title and a playoff berth."
