IronBirds Inch Past Lowell On Dropped Third Strike
Manny Hernandez and Scott Kalush each mashed three-run homers in an 8-7 win for the IronBirds over the Lowell Spinners. Kalush scored the game-winning run on a dropped strike three swinging to Chance Sisco. Spinners pitcher Elis Jimenez' breaking ball bounced away from catcher Jake Romanski and allowed Kalush score the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. For Kalush and Hernandez, it was the second round-tripper of the season for both of them. Hernandez' shot came in the first inning to put the 'Birds up 3-0 early. Kalush jumped on the first pitch he saw in the sixth inning to even the score.
Hammel Time!
Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Jason Hammel got the start for Aberdeen in his second minor league rehab appearance (he pitched for Bowie on 8/26). Hammel pitched well for the IronBirds, giving up a run and three hits (all in the third inning) in four innings of work. After the game he expressed that he was ready to re-join the parent club whenever they need him. Hammel has been on the MLB 15-Day Disabled list since July 29th recovering from a flexor mass strain in his right forearm.
Urban Strong Out Of The 'Pen
Austin Urban started the fifth inning in relief of Hammel and was able to a pitch the final five innings of the game to get his third win of the season.. He gave up six runs -- just one earned -- on seven hits and one walk. It was his second consecutive solid outing at home, with both turning out to be wins.
Mancini Named Team MVP
First baseman Trey Mancini was named the IronBirds Most Valuable Player for the 2013 season. The 8th round pick in the 2013 Draft led the 'Birds in multiple offensive categories, most notably batting average (.325), hits (82) and doubles (18). His .325 batting average would break the franchise record for a season and he is one hit shy of breaking the most hits in a season record.
On the mound tonight...
LHP Mitch Horacek willl make his 11th start of the season Aberdeen. He has pitched to a 5-4 with a 3.08 ERA. Lowell will send RHP Myles Smith to the mound. Smith is a September call up from the GCL Red Sox.
