Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Billy McKinney and Xavier Macklin hit solo homers, while Brent Powers tossed a seven-inning complete-game five-hit shutout as the Vermont Lake Monsters snapped an eight-game home losing streak with a 2-0 victory over the Staten Island Yankees in New York-Penn League action Tuesday night at historic Centennial Field. The Yankees had earlier won the completion of a suspended game from Monday night 6-4.
McKinney, who was 3-for-3 in the second game, gave Vermont a 1-0 lead with a one-out solo home run deep over the rightfield fence for his first home run as a Lake Monster. The 2013 first-round draft pick of the Oakland Athletics is now hitting .387 (12-for-31) with five runs and six RBI in eight games since joining Vermont last week. Macklin gave the Lake Monsters the 2-0 lead with a leadoff homer in the fifth.
Powers did not walk a batter and struckout nine Yankees as he threw 69 of his 88 pitches for strikes over the seven innings. He is the first Lake Monsters pitcher to throw a complete-game since Seth Frankoff tossed two during the 2011 season. The nine punchouts also gave Powers 69 strikeouts on the season, tying him with Scott Strickland for 10th-place on Vermont single-season list.
Earlier in the completion of the suspended game from Monday, Yeicok Calderon hit a three-run homer and Kale Sumner followed with a solo home run as Yankees snapped a 2-2 tie with four runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 6-2.
Lake Monsters reliever Dominique Vattuone (1-1) gave up a leadoff single and walk in the eighth before Calderon drilled a 3-2 pitch over the rightfield fence for his 10th home run of the season to give Staten Island a 5-2 lead. Sumner made it back-to-back homers with a flyball home run to left for his third long ball of the year.
The Lake Monsters and Yankees will wrap up the 2013 season on Wednesday night at 7:05 pm. It is Mansfield Heliflight Night at the ballpark, while the first 500 fans will receive a 20th anniversary t-shirt courtesy of Comfort Colors and the first 1,000 fans will receive a 20th anniversary Ãâàcard set featuring some of the best Lake Monsters players from the team's first 20 seasons when the gates open at 6:00 pm.
