Yankees Win Rain Shortened Season Finale 5-2 Wednesday

BURLINGTON, VT --- Abiatal Avelino went 3-for-3 with two runs, a double and three RBI as the Staten Island Yankees closed out the 2013 New York-Penn League season with a 5-2 five-inning rain-shortened victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters on Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field.

Avelino led off the game with a single and scored two outs later on a Mike Ford RBI double, then Avelino gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a two-out RBI single. Staten Island added three more runs in the fourth on four consecutive two-out hits, including an Avelino two-run double and Brandon Thomas RBI single.

Chad Pinder accounted for Vermont's two runs with a two-run homer to rightfield in the bottom of the fourth. It was the third home run of the season for Pinder, who also hit a home run in the Lake Monsters home opener back on June 20th against Connecticut. Starter Gregory Paulino, making his first appearance since July 14th, took the loss despite striking out three in his one inning of work.

Vermont reliever Ronald Herrera allowed four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings, while Ryan Huck doubled right before the Pinder home run for one of the Lake Monsters two hits. Staten Island starter David Palladino (3-2), who did not allow a hit over the first three innings, picked up the win as the Yankees finished their season 34-41.

The Lake Monsters end the season with a 33-43 record after winning just four of their last 16 games. The Vermont pitching staff ended the season with a 3.06 team ERA, the second-best in club history behind a 2.86 team ERA back in 1995. Offensively the Lake Monsters finished the year next-to-last in the league in average (.225) and runs scored (244), the second-fewest runs ever scored by a Vermont team (215 in 2003).

The 2013 NY-Penn League playoffs will begin on Friday with Pinckney Division champ State College taking on Jamestown, the wild-card winner, in one semifinal. Stedler Division champ Tri-City will take on McNamara winner Aberdeen in the other best-of-three semifinal round.

The Lake Monsters will return in June of 2014 for their 21st New York-Penn League season.
