Coastal Bend Thunder News Release

Robstown, Texas - It seemed as if almost every batter Thunder starter Toro Trevino faced tonight at Fairgrounds Field was in a 0-2 hole. By getting ahead in the count, the Corpus Christi native was able to keep the Bronco hitters off balance as well as keep his pitch count to a minimum. Trevino threw a complete game, allowed one run scattering six hits, and struck out nine to earn his sixth win of the season as the Coastal Bend Thunder prevailed 9-1.

The long ball provided most of the offense for Coastal Bend in the contest. Carlos Rodriguez and Bryan Vickers each belted two-run homeruns to deep leftfield. Bryan Vickers also added a solo homer in the seventh as well. Alex Fernandez and Manny Mejia each collected RBI doubles for Coastal Bend as well.

The Thunder jumped out on top in the bottom of the first plating three runs off of Laredo starter Edgar Soto. Alex Fernandez doubled home Zazueta to score the first run of the inning. With two outs, Carlos Rodriguez smacked an absolute bomb to left field and was quite possibly the farthest hit ball at Fairgrounds Field this year. The Rodriguez two-run homer gave the Thunder a 3-0 lead. A nice play by Bronco right fielder, Mario Mendez, on a sinking line drive off the bat of Dustin Smith with the bases loaded kept the Thunder from blowing the game wide open and kept the lead at three.

Designated hitter, Manny Mejia, led off the bottom of the third with a single to start another Thunder rally. Carlos Rodriguez singled to center and Mejia moved to third on the perfectly executed hit-and-run. Following a wild pitch that allowed Mejia to score, Bryan Vickers crushed a two-run homer to left field to give the Thunder a 6-0 advantage.

Manny Mejia's RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the sixth drove in both Michael Lewis and Amadeo Zazueta to extend the Thunder lead to seven.

Bryan Vickers added his second home run of the ball game in the bottom of the seventh. The solo homer to lead off the inning stretched the score to 9-1 in favor of the Thunder.

Coastal Bend hosts Laredo for game two of this four game series Tuesday at Fairgrounds Field in Robstown, Texas. Two for Tuesday includes 2-4-1 tickets to the already very affordable professional baseball experience.
