Coastal Bend Thunder News Release
Robstown, Texas - With runners on second and third and the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Thunder designated hitter Manny Mejia belted a two RBI single to left center to give Coastal Bend the win. After a wild pitch to move the runners up, it looked as if the Broncos were intent on walking Mejia to load the bases for Fernandez. The Laredo catcher Carillo signaled for the intentional walk but reliever Fernando Rijo threw a pitch right down the middle that Mejia hammered right back where it came from. The single to center drove in Zazueta and Ventura and proved to be the difference in tonight's game. With two outs, Carlos Rodriguez added an RBI double down the right field line that drove in Mejia from first to make the score 5-2.
Those three runs in the eighth settled an old fashioned pitcher's duel at Fairgrounds Field on Thursday night that pitted Corpus Christi native J.J. Trujillo against Laredo's Alfred Jenkins. Coastal Bend took the lead early scoring twice in the second but Jenkins completely shut down the Thunder offense over the next five innings. Trujillo was up to the task as well and gave the Thunder eight strong innings allowing only two runs while scattering eight hits and striking out eight. Trujillo earned the win and improved to 6-2 on the season. Benny Cepeda earned his eleventh save of the year after allowing a run in the ninth.3
Coastal Bend scored two runs in the bottom of the second to take an early lead. The Thunder loaded the bases with nobody out with walks to Mejia and Rodriguez sandwiched around an Alex Fernandez single. Mejia would score on a Bryan Vickers RBI single to left. Kevin Butler reached on a fielder's choice on a groundball to second beating out the double play to pick up the RBI as Fernandez scored from third.
Laredo cut the lead in half in the top of the third on an RBI single by Mario Mendez that drove in Luis Ugueto from third.
The Broncos tied the game in the top of the sixth. Designated hitter Alejandro Martinez led off the inning with a single. He was lifted for pinch runner Juan Senreiso. Following a walk to David Cardona, Trujillo induced a groundball and the Thunder middle infield turned a spectacular double play. It looked as if Coastal Bend would get out of the inning but Robert Moron blooped a single over Zazueta's head to drive in Senreiso.
Thursday's game marked the last regular season home game for the Thunder at Fairgrounds Field in 2009. Check the Thunder website, www.coastalbendthunder.com, for playoff ticket information as the Coastal Bend Thunder make the final push toward the United League playoffs.
