Broncos Swept Away By Thunder

Robstown, TX-The Laredo Broncos gave up three runs in the eighth, as they lost to the Coastal Bend Thunder by a score of 5-3 at Fairgrounds Field, on Thursday.

The Thunder started the scoring in the second inning. They had the bases loaded with no one out, when Bryan Vickers knocked in Manny Mejia with a single. The next batter Kevin Butler reached on a fielder's choice, which saw Alex Fernandez score. That gave Coastal Bend the early 2-0 lead.

The Broncos got on the scoreboard in the third. With one out Luis Ugueto doubled, and then went to third on a single by Jaime Morales. Mario Mendez followed with an rbi single that scored Ugueto. That made the score 2-1.

Laredo tied the game up in the sixth inning. Alejandro Martinez reached on a single and then went to second on a walk to David Cardona. Andres Santos then hit into a double play, but advancing to third was Juan Senreiso who pinch ran for Martinez. Robert Moron then knocked in Senreiso with a single. That tied the game at two.

Broncos' starter Aaron Jenkins left the game after seven strong innings of work. He gave up two runs, on three hits; he walked five, and struck out three. Fernando Rijo came in to pitch the eighth.

The Thunder threatened against Rijo in that eighth inning. With one out Amadeo Zazueta and Leivi Ventura hit back to back singles. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, and then Manny Mejia hit a two run single. Then with two outs Carlos Rodriguez hit an rbi double that scored Mejia. That gave Coastal Bend a 5-2 lead.

Benny Cepeda came into the game for the Thunder looking to finish the game. The Broncos scored a run when Jaime Morales reached on a fielder's choice, and Derek Beckman scored from third. But it wasn't enough, as Laredo lost by a score of 5-3.

The Broncos scored 2 runs on 9 hits and had 0 errors while the Thunder scored 5 runs on 7 hits and had 1 error.

The Broncos are now 22-54 on the season while the Thunder are 36-39. The Broncos will next be in action Friday August 28th, as they play game one of a four game series against the Coastal Bend Thunder at Veterans Field at 7:30.
