San Angelo Colts News Release
Edinburg, Texas---In another difficult battle, the Colts (47-29) defeated the Roadrunners (43-33) by a count of 5-3. San Angelo salvaged a split of the series and Edinburg can no longer catch the frontrunners in the United League Standings.
Unfortunate news for the Colts came when starting second baseman, Rich Paz, had to depart the contest as he left holding onto the back of his left leg. The specification or the status of the injury is unknown.
In this contest, Colts Manager, Doc Edwards, was tossed for the first time in 2009. He was thrown out in the bottom of the seventh after arguing that Vincent Blue lifted his foot off the third base bag and Bryan Frichter tagged the leadoff hitter.
Brian Henschel (11-3) delivered 6.2 innings and allowed three runs for the ULB leader in victories. Pedro Flores (5-4) took the loss as he lasted 5.2 frames and surrendered four. The save was awarded to Jameson Maj who collected his sixth of the season. Maj worked an inning-and-a-third of scoreless baseball.
In terms of game action, San Angelo raced to the lead. Ronnie Gaines tripled to shallow right center as two outfielders collided. After Hunter Jobes struck out, Rich Paz singled through the left side to plate Gaines. The road team had a 1-0 advantage.
Edinburg retaliated in the bottom of the second. Consecutive singles by Blue and Sergio Guerrero led to a sacrifice bunt from Hector Garanzuay and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Hunter Owen. On the fly ball, Blue crossed home to even the contest at one.
The road team struck back in the top of the third. Paz walked and Frichter singled. After Selwyn Langaigne flew out to center, Jason Landreth served an RBI single to center.
In the sixth, the Colts stood at all bases for Ronnie Gaines. A routine fly ball sailed over the head of right fielder Hunter Owen. It was ruled a two-run error as the ball hit off the heel of the glove. Selwyn Langaigne and John Anderson crossed home plate and San Angelo's lead advanced to 4-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, with a runner on third, a two-out single by Bryon Smyth scored Carlos Hereaud. The Roadrunners gap shrunk to two runs.
Edinburg continued to rally. After one out had been recorded, Blue and Guerrero singled before Garanzuay walked to load the bags. An infield single to first by Hunter Owen brought in the third run for the home team; however, the Roadrunners stranded the bases loaded.
San Angelo added an insurance run in the top of the eighth. Anderson led off with a double. Once an out was put on the scoreboard, Lanto reached on an infield knock to shortstop. With runners at the corners, Gaines hit into a Fielders' Choice and Anderson touched the plate. That action accounted for the last of the offense on the night.
Tommorrow night features the final home series for the San Angelo Colts during the regular season. Rio Grande Valley enters Foster Field in the first of a four game set. First pitch is slated for 7:05 P.M. while the gates are expected to open at 6:05. The Kemps Ice Cream Pre-game show will precede the San Angelo affair at 6:50.
