Coastal Bend Thunder News Release
Robstown, Texas--- The United League announced today that RMB Fairgrounds Field, the home of the Coastal Bend Thunder and maintained by head groundskeeper Phillip Hinojosa, was voted the best playing surface in the League.
In other year ending awards, after winning the Rookie-of-the-Year in 2008, San Angelo Colt's Bryan Frichter earned the ULB MVP in 2009. The third baseman led the League in batting average (.385) and was hitting at a .400 clip most of the regular season. Frichter completed the year with eight homers, five triples, 100 hits, and 29 stolen bases in just 65 games.
Colts Field Manager, Doc Edwards, was named Manager of the Year. In his 52nd year of professional baseball, the former Navy medic won the regular season championship for the second consecutive year. In 2009, his ball club won 48 times in 80 tries.
San Angelo's newspaper coverage of the Colts was also classified as the best in the League. As a result the San Angelo Standard-Times received kudos while the Amarillo Globe-News and Laredo Morning Times finished behind the winner.
In other League news, rookies, Butch Ballez and Hunter Jobes did not take rookie-of-the year; Amarillo's Trent Lockwood and Keanon Simon shared the honor. Lockwood finished second in the United League in home runs and RBI while Simon was an igniter at the top of the Dillas order. Both players were listed in the top ten in the batting average race.
Other ULB plaques go to:
Doug Leary, General Manager of the Edinburg Roadrunners, won the Executive of the Year. It was Leary's first season in the United League.
Jonah Goldberg, Director of Media Relations and Broadcasting for the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings, seized the title for Best team Public Relations/Radio Announcer. Goldberg is in his third season with the club.
