Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton Outfielder Edwar Gonzalez connected on a sacrifice fly RBI in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Trenton to a 1-0 10-inning victory over New Hampshire on Friday night from Waterfront Park. Trenton has won three of its first four games of the seven-game homestand.
Trenton broke a scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the tenth inning to walk-off with the win. Catcher P.J. Pilittere singled to start the bottom of the tenth inning against New Hampshire Reliever Wilfredo Ledezma (0-1). Left fielder James Cooper followed by dropping a bunt down the first base side. The bunt was fielded by New Hampshire Second baseman Brad Emaus. Emaus's throw to first base glanced off the glove of New Hampshire First baseman David Cooper. The error allowed Santana to move to third base. Cooper was credited with a bunt single, and David Cooper was given an error. Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez drove Santana home with a sacrifice fly RBI to win the game.
The win was Trenton's 11th walk-off win of the season, and second of the homestand. This was the fourth time Trenton's Pitching Staff has only allowed one hit this season. Trenton (62-62) now has 15 shutouts on the season to lead the Eastern League.
Trenton Starting Pitcher Paul Bush tossed four shutout innings. He allowed only one hit. He struck out four and walked three. New Hampshire Starting Pitcher Randy Boone hurled 7 2/3 innings and yielded only two hits. He struck out six and walked three. Both pitchers received no-decisions. Trenton Reliever Humberto Sanchez picked up the win in relief with a scoreless 10th. Ledezma allowed one unearned run in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss. Trenton's bullpen hurled a combined six shutout innings.
Bush worked out of a jam in the first inning. New Hampshire Left fielder Todd Donovan walked to start the game. He moved to second base on a single by Designated Hitter Manny Mayorson. A double-steal moved Donovan to third base and Mayorson to second base. But, Bush induced two consecutive pop-outs and struck out Center fielder Darin Mastroianni to work his way out of the inning. Trenton's best opportunity to score came in the fourth inning. The Thunder loaded the bases with one out for Pilittere. But, Pilittere grounded into an inning-ending double play to end the threat.
Trenton and New Hampshire will play the second game of a four-game series on Saturday night. RHP Lance Pendleton (0-2, 4.91) will start for Trenton against New Hampshire RHP Kenny Rodriguez (3-3, 4.18). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
