New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Trenton, NJ- Randy Boone threw 7.2 innings of two-hit baseball, stretching his personal scoreless-innings string to 16.1 frames, but the Trenton Thunder scored a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to edge the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 1-0, on Friday night at Waterfront Park
Boone, who threw seven innings of one-hit ball in Altoona last Saturday, had his streaks of 23 consecutive batters retired and 10.1 straight hitless innings both snapped in the top of the fourth when he walked Matt Cusick (0-for-3, BB) and yielded a double to Eduardo Nunez (1-for-4, 2B). Boone would get P.J. Pillittere to ground into a bases-loaded double play, starting another string of 11 straight batters retired before he departed with two outs and two on in the eighth, dropping his ERA from 3.82 to 3.49.
New Hampshire (56-68) put together its only threat in the top of the first inning when Todd Donovan (0-for-2, 2 BB, 2 SB) drew a walk and Manny Mayorson (1-for-4, SB) singled off Thunder starter Paul Bush. Donovan and Mayorson pulled off a successful double steal, but Bush retired David Cooper (0-for-4) and Nick Gorneault (0-for-4) on pop fly outs, and he struck out Darin Mastroianni (0-for-2, 2 BB, SB).
Bush (4 IP), Josh Schmidt (2 IP), Eric Wordekemper (2 IP), Jose Valdez (1 IP) and winning pitcher Humberto Sanchez (1 IP) combined to keep the Fisher Cats hitless the rest of the way with 13 strikeouts and six walks.
Sanchez (1-0) fanned two of the three batters he faced in a perfect 10th inning to notch his first win.
Trenton (62-62) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th against Wil Ledezma when Pillittere (1-for-3) led off with a single to left. Francisco Santana pinch ran for Pillittere and advanced to third base when James Cooper (1-for-4) bunted for a single and first baseman David Cooper missed the throw from second baseman Brad Emaus for an error. Edwar Gonzalez (1-for-3, SF, RBI) delivered a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Santana for the victory.
Ledezma (0-1) suffered his first defeat in his second Fisher Cats' appearance, yielding one run, unearned, on two hits with a strikeout in 1.2 innings.
New Hampshire sends right-hander Kenny Rodriguez (3-3, 4.18) to the mound against Trenton right-hander Lance Pendleton (0-2, 4.91) in a 7:05pm game on Saturday night at Waterfront Park. The BayRing Pre-Game Show begins at 6:45pm with Mike Murphy on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.
The Fisher Cats open their final homestand of the regular season on Tuesday, August 25, with a 7:05pm game against the Harrisburg Senators at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a free Gary Cathcart T-Shirt. For tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
