Trenton falls to new Britain 11-3

(Trenton, NJ)- New Britain scored four runs in the first inning, and went on for a 11-3 win over Trenton on Sunday afternoon from Waterfront Park. With the win, New Britain splits the four-game series.

New Britain scored four runs in the first inning off of Thunder Starting Pitcher Kanekoa Texeira to take a 4-0 lead. The first four batters in the top of the first inning picked up hits. New Britain Second baseman Brian Dinkelman led off the game with a double. He scored on an RBI double by Center fielder Juan Portes to give the Rock Cats a 1-0 lead. Right fielder Rene Tosoni followed with an RBI single to increase the lead to 2-0. Third baseman Danny Valencia made it 4-0 with a two-run home run off of Texeira. The Rock Cats tallied single runs in the second and third innings to stretch the lead to 6-0. Portes had an RBI ground out in the second inning, and Catcher Wilson Ramos connected on an RBI single in the third inning. Valencia finished a single short of the cycle for New Britain. He went 3 x 5 with a home run, triple, double, and two RBI.

Trenton notched three runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the New Britain lead to 6-3. With runners at second and third base and no outs, Shortstop Eduardo Nunez plated a run with an RBI ground out for the first run. Then with two outs, Left fielder Colin Curtis picked up an RBI double, and First baseman Jorge Vasquez drilled an RBI single.

New Britain added three runs in the fifth inning off of Thunder Reliever Noel Castillo. New Britain Left fielder Matt Moses had a two-run double as part of the frame. Tosoni hit a two-run home run for the Rock Cats in the sixth inning off of Thunder Reliever Kevin Whelan. Curtis extended his hitting streak to 12 games in the loss. Right fielder James Cooper went 2 x 4 with a double and a run in the loss for the Thunder. New Britain Starting pitcher Jeff Manship (1-2) scattered seven hits and three runs in six innings to pick up the win. Texeira (1-2) took the loss for Trenton. He allowed six hits and five runs (four earned) over two innings.

Trenton has an off day on Monday, and then opens up a three-game series on Tuesday against the Connecticut Defenders (Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants). RHP George Kontos (0-1, 3.77) will start for Trenton. Connecticut's starting pitcher is TBD. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
