Defenders Win 20-15 & Series 3-1

April 26, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release

PORTLAND, ME- An ordinary Sunday afternoon in Portland, ME quickly turned bizarre as the Connecticut Defenders had to rally twice to defeat the Portland Sea Dogs 20-15 and won the series 3-1.

The Defenders found themselves down five heading into the third inning but made their first rally posting eight unanswered runs capped off with a CF-Mike Mooney grand slam, his second of the series and Connecticut had an 8-5 lead.

Connecticut added a run in the fourth and three more in the sixth inning to have a very comfortable 12-5 advantage heading into the bottom of the frame which would be an inning to forget.

Portland would send fifteen batters to the plate and score ten unanswered runs off of ten hits to take a 15-12 lead.

The game went from wild to bizarre in the top of the eighth inning when the Defenders mounted their second rally scoring seven runs. It was Mike Mooney boosting the offense again when he scored on a wild pitch to give Connecticut the lead and they would add three more to take the 20-15 lead.

Both teams combined to use twelve pitchers but Defenders reliever, RHP-Steven Edlefsen (1-0) managed to blow the save and pick up his first win of the season. Edlefsen turned in just 1.2 innings of work, gave up two earned runs off of five hits, walked two and struck out one. The Sea Dogs RHP-Chris Province (2-3) fell victim to both the loss and the blown save and all happened in two thirds of an inning that included seven runs, five earned off of five hits and two walks.

The Defenders and Sea Dogs have a much deserved day off on Monday and Connecticut will travel to Trenton (Yankees) Tuesday to begin a three game series.
