Bats Come Alive As Baysox Avoid Sweep

READING, Pa. - The offense pounded out 16 hits and Jake Arrieta went six shutout innings as the Baysox took the finale of a four-game series 8-0 Sunday afternoon in Reading. Right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion and second baseman Miguel Abreu each had three hits apiece as the Baysox snapped the three-game skid and improved to 7-9 on the season.
Bowie got on the board early off Phillies starter Tyson Brummett. The Baysox started the game with three straight singles by center fielder Dave Krynzel, third baseman Melvin Dorta and designated hitter Paco Figueroa. With the bases loaded, first baseman Brandon Snyder grounded a ball to third that Neil Sellers threw away allowing two runs to score. Snyder got credit for an RBI on the play, his eleventh of the season which leads the team.
The Baysox tallied single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to double their lead to 4-0. Outfielder Joe Nowicki got his first hit as a member of the Baysox, a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the fourth which plated left fielder Jonathan Tucker. Tucker crossed the plate again in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Robert Valido. Tucker was a nuisance for Reading pitchers all day, going 2-4 with a walk and a stolen base, scoring all three times he got on base.
Baysox right-hander Jake Arrieta stayed in control of the Reading offense all afternoon. The 23-year-old from Plano, TX worked six scoreless innings allowing two hits and two walks while striking out six to earn his second win of the season. In four starts this season, Arrieta has allowed four earned runs in 18 innings work, leading the team with 22 strikeouts.
The Baysox offense put the game out of reach in the eighth off Phillies right-hander Joe Bisenius. The aforementioned Tucker walked to start the inning and went to second on a wild pitch. Miguel Abreu chased him home with a single to center to put the Baysox up five. One batter later, Nowicki drew a free pass to put two runners on for Dorta. The Baysox third baseman laced a double to right field which scored Abreu as Nowicki advanced to third. The Baysox tallied one more in the inning on a wild pitch, and when the dust settled the Baysox were up eight heading into the ninth inning.
Wilfrido Perez came on and allowed a hit before closing out the win for the Baysox. Perez has yet to allow an earned run in seven appearances on the year. In 24 games with the Baysox since 2008, the young southpaw has held his opponent scoreless in 19 of them. He has also been especially tough on left-handers, who are hitting a meager .100 (1-10) off him so far this season.
The Baysox will travel to Erie for the second time this season to open up a three game set with the SeaWolves. The two teams are meeting for the third time already this season, although the rain washed out two of the three games between the two teams in Bowie last week. Game time Monday is set for 6:35.
