Portland loses an epic contest, 20-15 to Connecticut!

(Portland, ME) The Connecticut Defenders (8-9) scored eight unanswered runs over the final two innings, winning the series from the Portland Sea Dogs (7-9), 20-15 on Sunday afternoon at Hadlock Field. Portland picked up a franchise record 23 hits and scored 10 runs on 10 hits in the sixth inning. Sundays game also established a franchise record for combined runs (35) and hits (43), surpassing the previous record on July 29, 2007 when Connecticut beat Portland 20-13 at Hadlock Field.
RHP Steven Edlefsen (2-0) allowed five hits and two runs but managed the win for the visitors. RHP Chris Province (2-3) took the loss in relief for the Sea Dogs, giving up 5 hits and 7 runs over .2 IP. RHP Daniel Otero fired two scoreless frames to close out the victory for Connecticut.
Portland scored their 15 runs in just two innings, taking a 5-0 lead after the second inning. 2B Ryan Khoury (3-for-6) knocked in the games first run with single. SS Zach Borowiak (2-for-5) followed with a line-drive, run-scoring single to center, which led to a third run on a misplay by LF Bobby Felmy. 1B Lars Anderson finished 3-for-5, 5 RBI and drove in a pair with a single in the second.
Connecticut responded with 8 runs off RHP Blake Maxwell (2.2 IP, 8 R, 7 ER) in the top of the third inning, CF Mike Mooney (4-for-6, HR, 5 RBI) highlighted the scoring with a grand slam to right field. 2B Brock Bond (2-for-5, 2 RBI) blasted a solo-homer into the U.S. Cellular Pavilion in the fourth inning off RHP T.J. Large, giving Connecticut a 9-5 lead. The visitors added three runs in the sixth inning on a 2-run triple by LF Bobby Felmy and a sac-fly by 1B Brett Pill.
The sixth inning was one for the ages as Portland sent 15 men to the plate, scoring 10 runs and picking up 10 hits. CF Josh Reddick (2-for-5, 2 RBI) blasted a 2-run homer, RF Bubba Bell a 2-run triple, Anderson a 2-run single (3 RBI in the inning) and Borowiak, DH Mark Wagner and C Jon Still added RBIs for Portland.
During the Defenders 7-run eighth inning, two errors created two unearned runs. Mooney, C Tyler LaTorre and SS Brian Bocock had RBIs for Connecticut.
Portland is off on Monday and will resume their 7-game homestand on Tuesday night against the Binghamton Mets at 6:00 PM.
