
Trenton Ends Cyclones Reign, 6-0

CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Cyclones 14 game winning streak at home and 22 game unbeaten stretch in regulation time (20-0-2), came to a halt in a 6-0 loss to Trenton on Thursday night. Jason Smith stopped all 35 Cincinnati shots in taking the victory, as Trevor Kell scored a goal and added three assists in the triumph.
The first period ended scoreless, but Cincinnati had its opportunities. The Cyclones had four power play chances and outshot Trenton, 19-2, but was able to convert these into scores.
The second period belonged to Trenton, as the Devils scored three times in a 5:21 span to take the lead. Tony Zancanaro scored his eleventh and twelfth goals at 2:24 and 5:15 to give Trenton a 2-0 edge. Stephen Wood's 14th goal at 7:45 gave the Devils a 3-0 edge. The Cyclones pulled starting goaltender Maxime Daigneault at that point and backup Cody Rudkowsky, who posted a shutout in his debut game last night-stopped all eight shots he faced in the period to keep the score where it was at 3-0. Trenton outshot Cincinnati, 14-10, in the frame.
The Devils netted three more goals in the third period-all on the power play. Zach Tarkir scored his first of the season at 4:20, as Kell picked up his 15th at 10:58 and Wood netted his second of the night at 15th of the campaign at 12:19. The final shots on goal favored Cincinnati, 35-30.
It was the first time the Cyclones had been shutout since January 7, 2007 in a 1-0 loss at Dayton.
Cyclones forward David Desharnais, had his 27 consecutive game point streak-the longest stretch in the ECHL this season-end in the shutout During this run, Desharnais had eleven goals and 36 assists for 47 points and is the ECHL's scoring leader with 82 points.
The Cyclones had won 14 straight home games, dating back to Jan. 5. Cincinnati had outscored the opposition, 64-36, during that run. It was the longest home winning streak in the ECHL this season. The Cyclones had gone 22 straight games (20-0-2) without losing in regulation time at U.S. Bank Arena. The last time, prior to night, the club dropped a game in the regulation 60 minutes at home was on Nov. 24.
The Cincinnati Cyclones are 36 games above .500, with a 46-10-3 record and sole possession of first place in the North Division-21 ahead of Reading for second place and 22 points ahead of second place Elmira. The loss gives Cincinnati a 30-4-1 record since December 15. Trenton is 22-32-7. The 46 wins are the most ever by the club.
The Cyclones are next in action Friday night (March 14) at Wheeling for a 7:30pm tilt.
