Trenton Devils News Release
CINCINNATI, OH (March 13, 2008) - It was a night for records to fall, streaks to be broken, and the Devils to roar in the Queen City. Jason Smith earned his first career shutout and Trenton pumped six goals into the back of the net, breaking several Cincinnati streaks and taking a 6-0 victory into a season-making set with Dayton.
The Devils set a season high in goals scored, while snapping Cincinnati's fourteen game winning streak at home. Trenton's shutout also stopped the hottest player in the ECHL, as David Desharnais saw his fourth-longest-in-ECHL-history point streak ended at 27 games.
Jason Smith provided the Devils with plenty of momentum into the first period, stopping 19 shots while quarterbacking a penalty kill which was perfect on the night. The Capital City squad killed all four penalties they took in the first period, and never again were short-manned.
Tony Zancanaro provided the game-winner early in the second period, taking a feed from Trevor Kell and dekeing out Cincinnati's Maxime Daigneault before sending a wrister to the top left shelf.
The Providence alum would then give the Devils their second tally with a one-timer set up by Kell from behind the net 5:15 into the second period.
The Devils made it 3-0 into the third period when Stephen Wood fired home a pass from Matt Radoslovich. The goal, two minutes after Zancanaro's second, would chase Daigneault from the net.
Cincinnati's replacement netminder, Cody Rudkowsky, would hold Trenton down for the remainder of the second, but fell apart under the Devils' power play pressure.
Zach Tarkir scored his first goal of the season with a slapper from the bottom point with seconds to go in Trenton's first power play. The blast, 4:20 into the third, was the second point of Tarkir's three-point night (1g, 2a).
Matt Cohen and Stephen Wood would complete the power play onslaught, scoring extra-man goals less than a minute-and-a-half apart. In between, a line brawl erupted between the two sides right on the center-ice faceoff after Cohen's tally.
Tarkir, Kell, and Zancanaro all had three-point nights, while Matt Radoslovich and Eric Castonguay picked up two assists each.
Trenton went 3-for-4 on the power play.
Smith made 35 saves on 35 shots for the win. He had come close to a shutout twice before this season, foiled in the last three minutes at Pensacola and in the last 58 seconds at Wheeling.
Cinci had last lost in regulation at home in November. They had gone 20-0-2 in that stretch.
The Trenton Devils face the Dayton Bombers tomorrow, March 14 at 7:0pm. Trenton trails Dayton for the fifth and final playoff spot in the North Division, but plays the Bombers three more times.
