Arkansas Travelers News Release
TULSA, OK - Jon Gray pitched six strong innings and the Tulsa bullpen held off a late charge to pull off a 3-2 victory over the Arkansas Travelers on Thursday night at ONEOK Field. For the third consecutive game the Travs trailed from the first inning and ran their losing streak to eight.
Gray (8-4) earned his second win over the Travs allowing just two base hits and an unearned run to defeat Michael Roth (7-5).
Roth was spotty early on but recovered to also finish six innings with three runs allowed, two earned, on six hits and three walks.
Tulsa loaded the bases against Roth in the first inning on a single by Delta Cleary, Jr. and two walks. Taylor Featherston's sacrifice fly scored Cleary. The Drillers got ahead 2-0 when Brian Humphries led off the second inning with a home run (4) to right field.
Gray allowed his first hit in the fourth inning, a single by Matt Long, but the run off Gray came in the fifth inning. Michael Snyder hit a fly ball that hit midway up the left field fence, fooling Humphries who scaled the wall in anticipation of a possible home run. Snyder got to second base on a double then had to dive back to second base when Gray fielded Kaleb Cowart's grounder to the mound. Gray's throw hit off Snyder's helmet and ricocheted to right field allowing Snyder to advance to third on an error. Eric Stamets drove Snyder home with a sacrifice fly.
Roth retired nine in a row before allowing a single to Cleary in the fifth inning. After stealing second base, Cleary took third on a wild pitch. Then he attempted to score when Roth bounced a pitch off Jett Bandy, who retrieved the ball in time to flip to Roth behind his back for the tag at home plate.
Poor fielding victimized Roth in the sixth inning with two of his usually sure-handed infielders making an error. After Tyler Massey hit a leadoff single and advanced on a sacrifice by Cristhain Adames, Stamets misplayed a grounder hit by Ryan Casteel to set up Featherston with runners at the corners. Roth induced a grounder to Cowart at third base, but the ball slipped underneath his glove for another error allowing Massey to score for a 3-1 Tulsa lead.
Gray gave way to R.J. Seidel for a perfect seventh inning. Seidel returned for the eighth and Cowart reached on a wild pitch third strike. A one-out bunt single by Drew Heid put the tying runs on base for Texas League RBI-leader Alex Yarbrough, who bounced to first baseman David Bergin who started a double play to end the inning.
Tulsa closer Cole White opened the gates for the Travs in the ninth with a leadoff walk to Long then he hit Brian Hernandez with a pitch placing the tying runs on base again. An RBI single by Mike Bianucci scored Long to cut the deficit to one run. But after Bandy popped up a sacrifice bunt attempt, White got Snyder to ground to Featherston at second base for another double play to end the game. White earned his sixth save of the year and second in as many nights.
Time of game was 2:34 and the paid attendance was 5,210.
On Friday evening the Travs have Kramer Sneed (5-6, 4.57) pitching against Tulsa's Ryan Kulik (0-2, 9.00). Game time is set for 7:10 p.m.
