RoughRiders Announce Series of Roster Moves
July 11, 2014 - Texas League (TL1)
Frisco RoughRiders News Release
FRISCO, TEXAS (JULY 11, 2014) - The Frisco RoughRiders, Double-A affiliate of the Texas Rangers, will play the third game of their series against the Corpus Christi Hooks with an altered roster after a series of transactions on Friday.
Rangers outfielder Engel Beltre will continue his major league rehab assignment with Frisco. The 'Riders also add catcher/first baseman J.T. Wise to the roster from Triple-A Round Rock.
In addition, right-handed relief pitcher Ryan Rodebaugh has been placed on the seven-day disabled list and catcher Carlos Garay has been transferred to the Arizona League Rangers.
Finally, the RoughRiders receive newly-signed free agent Brodie Downs, a right-handed pitcher on his first assignment with the organization.
Beltre, 24, joins the RoughRiders as part of a 20-game rehab stint as he recovers from a fractured right tibia. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound lefty broke the bone in spring training and landed on the disabled list March 26. He began his rehab assignment with the Round Rock Express and played his first of 11 games with the Triple-A affiliate on June 26.
The Boston Red Sox signed the native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic as an amateur free agent in the summer of 2006. One year later, a four-player trade brought Beltre to the Rangers and he played in three seasons with the RoughRiders from 2010-2012. In his final year in the Texas League, Beltre played in 133 games and batted .261 with 13 home runs and 55 RBI. He made his major league debut on June 26, 2013 and posted a .250 average at the plate in 22 games with the Rangers.
Wise, 28, is a 6-foot, 210-pound first baseman and catcher from Orlando, Florida. The Los Angeles Dodgers selected Wise in the fifth round of the 2009 June Draft from the University of Oklahoma. He spent five years in the Dodgers system, reaching as high as Double-A Chattanooga in the Southern League for the 2012-2013 seasons.
The Dodgers released Wise in April and he played 47 games with the Wichita Wingnuts of the independent American Association. Texas signed Wise on July 7 and initially assigned him to Round Rock where he played in one game and totaled one at-bat. The righty holds a .287 career batting average through 497 minor league games.
Rodebaugh, 25, heads to the DL for the second time this season and joins fellow right-handed reliever Wilmer Font. The 6-foot, 190-pounder owns a 1-0 record with a 7.23 ERA through 17 appearances and 18 2/3 innings pitched this season.
Garay, 19, departs for the AZL for the third time this season. The Rangers initially assigned the 6-foot, 210-pound backstop to Frisco from extended spring training on May 12. Through three fractured runs with the 'Riders from May 12-June 5, June 12-19 and June 25-July 11, the Venezuelan served primarily as the club's bullpen catcher. He saw action in two games and made one start at catcher.
Downs is a 6-foot-4, 235-pound pitcher from Modesto, California. The righty will turn 35 on July 19 and has not played for a major league affiliate since 2009. The Seattle Mariners drafted Wise in the 23rd round of the 2007 June Draft from Modesto Junior College. He climbed as high as Triple-A in the Mariners organization and pitched in 23 Pacific Coast League games with Tacoma in 2009. After the Mariners released Downs before the 2010 season, he spent parts of the 2013-2014 seasons in the independent Atlantic League and also played in eight games for the Saltillo Saraperos in the Mexican League this year. The Rangers signed Downs as a free agent on July 11.
After today's alterations, Frisco's roster stands at 23 active members plus two rehab assignees and two players on the DL.
The RoughRiders continue a four-game homestand against the Corpus Christi Hooks on Friday at 7:05 p.m. For tickets and information on how to see the RoughRiders in 2014, please call (972) 731-9200, e-mail Info@RidersBaseball.com or visit www.RidersBaseball.com.
