Arkansas Travelers News Release
Ray Winder Field, Little Rock, AR - A five-run rally in the seventh inning gave the Arkansas Travelers (9-9, 33-54) their third straight win in an 8-6 victory over the San Antonio Missions (10-8, 37-49).
After San Antonio scored three runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead, the Travs had six consecutive batters reach with Aaron Peel's single driving in two runs to tie the game and SS Brandon Wood knocking in the winning run with a single. RHP Bobby Zimmermann (1-2) had his best outing of the year with three shutout innings on two hits and three strikeouts for the win. Travs 1B Matt Pali finished 3-for-4 with a home run (8), a double and two runs scored. Arkansas RF Nathan Haynes also homered (1), drove in two runs with two hits and scored twice. CF Terry Evans hit his third home run in four games (Minor League high 25th) and threw a runner out at home plate. The Missions pounded out 15 base hits with SS Ozzie Navarro, LF Mike Wilson and 2B Yung Chi Chen each collecting three hits. LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (0-1) took the loss allowing three runs in 1.2 innings.
Arkansas starter RHP Jose Arredondo and San Antonio LHP Robert Rohrbaugh each tossed two shutout innings with Rohrbaugh striking out five of the first seven batters he faced.
The Missions broke through in the third inning after one out. Navarro stroked a double, but Arredondo struck out Jason Bourgeois for the second out. Arredondo walked Wladimir Balentien and Hubbard lined a double off the right-field wall bringing home two runs. Wilson followed with a line drive single to right field for a 3-0 Missions lead.
The Travs started to comeback in the fourth inning when Evans hit a two-out home run to right. Pali began the fifth inning when he jacked the first pitch of the fifth inning over the right-field wall. After one out, Haynes hit a high ball over the right field wall as well to tie the game, at 3-3.
Arredondo left after the fifth inning with three runs allowed on eight hits, four walks and three strikeouts.
RHP Bill Edwards relieved for the sixth and San Antonio CF Sebastien Boucher hit a leadoff double. Navarro chopped over the mound for an infield single moving Boucher to third. Bourgeois gave the Missions a 4-3 lead with a sacrifice fly to right field. Balentien followed with a groundball single to center that Evans picked up and rifled home to nail Navarro for the second out. Balentien moved to second on the play at home and scored when Hubbard hit a double to the left-field corner. Wilson's second single of the night scored Hubbard again for a 6-3 Missions lead. Chen then hit another liner into right, but Haynes made a sparkling diving catch to save a run and end the inning.
The Travs' game-winning rally began with one out in the seventh inning. Pali drove a double to the right-field gap and Rohrbaugh hit 2B Eric Rodland with a 2-2 pitch. Rowland-Smith was summoned from the bullpen and Haynes lined a single to center. Boucher got off a smooth-but-high throw to the plate forcing Ruchti to jump for the ball. When he landed on the ground, Ruchti was standing on the back of the plate and Pali ran threw him and was called safe. Haynes advanced to second base and Ruchti was replaced, favoring his right foot, by Brian Schweiger. Aaron Peel then knocked a looping single to right field forcing Chen and Balentien to converge on the ball which fell in between. Rodland and Haynes scored the tying runs and Peel ran for second base while Balentien threw wild into left field. 3B Matt Tuiasosopo backed-up the ball leaving third base open and Peel ran for third base. Travs 3B Matt Brown followed with a line drive single to right to score Peel for a 9-7 lead.
Zimmerman retired the first five batters he faced before allowing a single in the eighth. He pitched around a one-out single in the ninth inning retiring Schweiger with a runner on base for the last out.
The Travs have won eight of 11 games and are still two games in back of Wichita for first place in the North Division. The second game of this four-game series will be played Tuesday night. Arkansas has RHP Jesse Smith (5-8, 4.53 ERA) pitching against San Antonio LHP Travis Blackley (6-6, 4.00 ERA). First pitch will be thrown at 7:10 p.m. while the gates open at 6:10 p.m.
