Travs Stun Cards With 9-7 Comeback Win

SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI - Down by six runs in the fourth inning, the Arkansas Travelers stormed back and pulled off a 9-7 victory on Saturday night over the Springfield Cardinals. Mark Trumbo's tie-breaking two-run homer (15) in the ninth inning provided the winning runs on a night where every Trav players got involved in the offense and the club produced 16 base hits. Trumbo finished with three RBI and two base hits, while Ryan Mount and Hank Conger each collected three hits.

The Travs win moves them into a tie for third place with Springfield and also ties the season series at 13-13.

Tim Kiely struggled at the outset of the game, allowing seven runs (four earned) over four innings. Trailing 7-1 in the fourth, Kiely retired 9 of the last 10 Cards batters. Three Travs relievers held Springfield to one base hit over 2.1 innings with Barret Browning (W, 3-10) going 1.2 innings in relief for the win. David Herndon (Sv, 10) struck out Andrew Brown with a runner on base to save the win.

The Cardinals got a quick start in the first inning although Kiely retired the first two batters then had Brown hit a hard one-hopper to shortstop. The ball bounced up on Hainley Statia and out of his glove allowing Brown to reach on an error. Steven Hill followed with a single to left, and Joe Mather turned on a 1-2 pitch lining it into the left-field bullpen (2) for a 3-0 Springfield lead.

Brown, who finished with four RBI on the night, drove in two runs with a two-out single in the second inning. After the Travs managed a run in the third inning on an RBI single from Coby Smith, Brown launched a long two-run homer (13) off Kiely in the fourth to hand Cards starting pitcher Brandon Dickson a 7-1 lead.

Dickson held the Travs to one run on four base hits in four innings, but issued a walk to Wil Ortiz leading off the fifth. Statia singled to move Ortiz into scoring position. After reaching third base on a fielder's choice hit by Ivan Contreras, Ortiz scored when Bourjos beat out a flare that fell behind the mound for an infield single.

Down 7-2 in the sixth, the Travs put together a two-out rally to knock Dickson from the game. Mount began the rally with a double to left field. Branden Florence drove him in with a double past third base. An RBI single by Ortiz cut the deficit to 7-4, and Ortiz took second base on a throw home. Dickson was replaced by Marco Gonzalez, and he was greeted by an RBI single from Hainley Statia getting the Travs within a 7-5 score.

Returning for the seventh inning Gonzalez walked Bourjos and gave up three base hits with one out. Conger sent Bourjos to third base on a single to right field. Then Trumbo drove in his first run of the night grounding a single to left field. A single by Mount loaded the bases, and Conger scored when Florence hit a slow groundout to shortstop tying the game at 7-7.

Kiely came into the bottom of the seventh on a string of seven consecutive outs. He began the seventh with his only strikeout, catching Daryl Jones looking. Brown drew a walk then Steven Hill lined out. Bobby Cassevah relieved Kiely and retired Mather on a slow roller to third base.

Kiely's line was seven runs (four earned) on ten base hits, one walk and one strikeout over 6.2 innings during a no-decision.

Gary Daley pitched a scoreless eighth for the Cards then returned for the ninth. Conger put the winning run on base with a one-out single. With Trumbo batting, Conger ran for second base on an 0-2 pitch that bounced away. Credited with a stolen base, Conger took third on the wild pitch. Trumbo then yanked the next pitch over the left-field fence to give the Travs their first lead of the night, at 9-7.

Browning had worked a perfect eighth inning and also got two outs in the ninth before allowing Jones a single. Herndon was summoned to come on to save the game.

Time of game was 2:51 and the paid attendance numbered 7,516.

The Travs and Redbirds are back to the field on Sunday afternoon at 2:10 p.m. The Travs plan on right hander Marco Albano (5-6, 3.78) taking the mound, while the Cards have Scott Gorgen (4-4, 4.83) pitching.
