Frisco RoughRiders News Release

The RockHounds hit a walk-off home run to eliminate the RoughRiders from playoff contention and advance Midland to the postseason

The RoughRiders were knocked out of the playoff picture on Saturday as the RockHounds clinched the second half title in the South Division, defeating Frisco 4-3 on a walk-off home run. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Midland's Matt Sulentic hit his seventh home run on the season to win the game and send the RockHounds to the playoffs. Both teams combined for four home runs in the contest.

The RockHounds took an early 1-0 lead in the first frame, but Frisco took the lead 2-1 in the fourth inning when Steve Murphy hit a two-run home run. Midland tied the game at two in the bottom of the fourth on a solo homer by Shane Peterson. Frisco retook the lead in the fifth inning when Jonathan Greene hit a solo home run, giving Frisco the 3-2 advantage, but Midland tied the game at three in the sixth frame when Josh Donaldson hit his ninth homer on the season. With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth, Sulentic hit a long fly ball over the short porch in right field to give Midland the walk-off victory.

Frisco starter Danny Gutierrez allowed two runs on three hits over five innings, striking out three in his RoughRiders' debut. Zach Phillips blew the save and Clayton Hamilton (1-4) took the loss, giving up the game-winning home run. Midland reliever Jon Hunton (4-4) earned the win with a scoreless inning of work.

Greene had the only multi-hit game for the ‘Riders, including his fourth homer of the season. Murphy led the team with a pair of RBI, coming on his 10th home run of the season, despite striking out three times. Frisco was just 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position.

With the loss, Frisco is now eliminated from the playoff hunt as Midland clinches the second half championship in the South Division of the Texas League and will face San Antonio in the first round of the playoffs next week. The RockHounds, who are now two games ahead of the ‘Riders in the standings, hold the tie-breaker between the two teams. Frisco, who have guaranteed an overall record over .500 for the third consecutive season, will finish the 2009 season with games Sunday and Monday in Midland.
