Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals let a six-run lead slip away, as the Arkansas Travelers stole game one of the three-game set, with a 9-7 win over the Redbirds on Saturday night at Hammons Field.
Mark Trumbo's two-run bomb in the ninth inning put the Travs ahead for the first time, as they scored the game's final eight runs.
Daryl Jones kept the Cards alive in the bottom of the ninth, singling to center field off winning pitcher Barret Browning (3-10). With two outs, David Herndon was called out of the bullpen to face Andrew Brown, who had homered earlier in the evening. Brown went down swinging though, giving Herdon his 10th save of the year.
The Cards built leads of 5-0 and 7-1 after four innings. Joe Mather's three-run homer in the first inning put Springfield up 3-0. Brown's two-run single in the second, made it a 5-0 lead.
The Travs got a run off Springfield starter Brandon Dickson in the third, making it a 5-1 game.
Brown ripped a two-run blast to left-center field in the fourth though, his 13th of the year, giving Springfield a 7-1 advantage.
Arkansas got one in the fifth, then picked up three in the sixth, chasing Dickson. Trailing 7-5 in the seventh, Springfield reliever Marco Gonzalez gave up a pair of runs, as the Travs tied the game at 7-7.
Trumbo's 15th homer of the year, with Hank Conger aboard in the ninth, came off Springfield reliever Gary Daley (0-2).
The Redbirds (32-36, 70-68) host the Travs on Sunday, in game two of the three-game series. Scott Gorgen (4-4) will take on Marco Albano (5-6) on Sunday afternoon. Game time is 2:10pm.
Sunday is another Hiland Dairy Ice Cream Sunday, as Kids will also "Run the Bases" after the game, thanks to the Killian Group of Companies. Don't forget that Monday is the final game of the regular season, with a special Labor Day start time of 12:10pm.
