Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
NORTH LITTLE ROCK, AR - Albert Suarez held the Hooks to a pair of hits over the first six innings Saturday night as the Travelers dispatched Corpus Christi 4-1 before 8,054 fans at Dickey-Stephens Park.
Brian Holmes matched Suarez thru four frames before running into trouble in the fifth. Singles by Raywilly Gomez and Drew Maggi opened the inning. Holmes (1-1) responded by inducing a double play, leaving Gomez at third base. Eric Stamets was next and hit a sharp ground ball to third. Tyler White made a diving stop but was unable to record an out as the Travs jumped ahead 1-0.
Brian Hernandez opened the Arkansas (28-20) sixth with a double to left-center off Chris Cotton. Hernandez moved to third on a single and scored via a force play hit into by Kentrail Davis.
The Travs made it a 3-0 game in the seventh against Juan Minaya. Sherman Johnson worked a one-out walk. With Johnson on the move, Stamets singled through the vacated hole on the right side. Cal Towey cashed in the run with a double down the left-field line.
Suarez (5-3) left the game after retiring White, who led off the seventh. Suarez walked two and fanned three, throwing 59 of 96 pitches for strikes.
The Hooks (32-16) finally broke through in the eighth against Chris O'Grady. Leo Heras reached on an error by Stamets at short to begin the frame. Roberto Pena was next and cracked a double to left field. Maggi bobbled the ball, allowing Hernandez to scamper home. Pena moved to third on a deep fly ball by Chan-Jong Moon, but was promptly picked off by catcher Zack Wright with Teoscar Hernandez at the plate.
Arkansas answered in the home half. Jandel Gustave allowed the first two to reach thanks to a single and a walk, respectively. Three batters later, Sherman Johnson's bases-loaded sac fly pushed it back to a three-run game.
Danny Reynolds worked around a two-out walk to record his second save.
The series will be decided Sunday afternoon. Mike Hauschild (3-1, 3.58) takes the hill for the Hooks in the 2:10 finale. Michael Brady (0-2, 2.45) is slated to make his second start for Arkansas.
