Springfield Cardinals News Release
Midland, TX - After the Springfield Cardinals took the opener on Friday, the Midland RockHounds evened the series with a 7-4 win before 5,768 fans at Security Bank Ballpark on Saturday night.
Midland (26-23) again put together a big opening inning, striking for five runs against RHP Nick Petree (L, 1-5) in the bottom of the first. CF Jaycob Brugman led off with a triple, the first of his four hits on the night, before former Cardinal and current RockHounds LF Colin Walsh brought him home with an RBI single. After a DH Matt Olson walk, RF Josh Whitaker scored Walsh with an RBI double, making it 2-0. Petree retired the inning's first out with a groundout, but SS Chad Pinder then plated both runners with a two-run double off the left field fence. After taking third on a fly out, Pinder scored the inning's final run on an RBI base hit from C Bruce Maxwell, providing the RockHounds with the early 5-0 lead.
Petree slowed the Midland attack with scoreless stanzas in the second and the third, while the Cardinals (16-33) broke through against RHP Jake Sanchez (W, 4-3) in the top of the third. 1B David Washington started the inning with a double to left-center, the start of his three-hit performance. After a pair of groundouts and with Washington at third base, CF Charlie Tilson placed an RBI infield single to the right side, beating the play at first base to allow Washington to dart home and make it 5-1.
Springfield kept chipping away with its second run in the top of the fourth. With two down and the bases empty, DH Anthony Garcia rifled a single to left field to keep the inning alive. C Michael Ohlman then lined an RBI double to left field, plating Garcia all the way from first to bring the Cardinals within three runs of tying it, 5-2. With the RBI, Ohlman has now driven in at least one run in seven of his last eight games.
However, Midland stretched the lead back to five runs with a pair in the bottom of the fourth. Brugman led off with a single, promptly followed by an RBI triple from Walsh. Walsh then came home on an RBI sacrifice fly by Olson, and Midland's lead was up to 7-2.
Petree once again rebounded with two scoreless innings, keeping the RockHounds from adding to their advantage throughout the rest of his six-inning start.
After Sanchez exited the game following his sixth inning, the Cardinals jumped on RHP Ryan Doolittle in the top of the seventh. Ohlman sparked the rally with a single, before moving to second on a base knock by Washington. 2B Bruce Caldwell, in his Double-A debut, then ripped an RBI double down the left field line, scoring Ohlman and moving Washington to third base. One out later, Tilson skied an RBI sacrifice fly to left field, enabling Washington to tag and score and bring the Cardinals back within three runs, 7-4.
RHP Joey Donofrio kept the Cardinals within striking distance with scoreless relief in the seventh and eighth. However, Midland countered with two scoreless stanzas from RHP Bobby Wahl (S, 4), and the RockHounds hung on for the 7-4 win.
The Cardinals conclude the six-game road trip with the rubber match in Midland on Sunday at 2pm. Catch all the action live on Jock 98.7FM and SpringfieldCardinals.com, and tune in 15 minutes early for the Coyote's Sports Cafe Pregame Show.
