April 12, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
Arkansas Travelers News Release
Frisco, TX - The Arkansas Travelers completed a three-game sweep of the Frisco RoughRiders with a 4-0 win on Saturday night at Dr. Pepper Ballpark.
LHP Tyler DeLoach (W, 1-0) picked up right where he left off in 2014 and tossed six innings for Arkansas en route to the victory. RHP Eduard Santos (2 IP) and RHP Kurt Spomer completed the shutout for the Travs.
DeLoach allowed only two hits while walking two and striking out five. The southpaw went 4-0 in six starts for the Travs after a promotion from Advanced-A Inland Empire last season.
For a third-straight game, the Travelers struck for a run in the first inning. On Saturday it was 2B Sherman Johnson who launched a leadoff homerun to right to put Arkansas up 1-0. The longball was the Travs' first of the season, but LF Kentrail Davis followed suit with a bomb of his own to leadoff the second inning. Davis' home run landed on the berm in right field to put the Travs up 2-0.
The Travs added runs in the third and seventh on 3B Brian Hernandez RBIs to take a 4-0 lead.
While the Travelers' pitchers cruised, things got chippy on the field. Rangers Major Leaguer on Rehab RHP Tanner Scheppers threw behind SS Eric Stamets in the eighth, and was immediately ejected by first base umpire Bryan Fields. Scheppers & 'Riders Manager Joe Mikulik argued with Fields for minutes with Mikulik providing entertaining for the remaining fans by kicking his hat and making a mess of both the first and third base lines. Mikulik has become known for tirades towards umpires with numerous meltdowns documented on YouTube.
Johnson scored three of the four Travelers runs and has crossed the plate seven times over the first three games of the season.
RoughRiders' starter RHP Jake Thompson (L, 0-1) lasted four-plus innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
Thompson, LHP Will Lamb, RHP Josh McElwee, Scheppers and RHP Francisco Mendoza combined to strike out 13 Travs (including all nine starters at least once).
With the win, the Travs improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2005. Arkansas will head West to Midland to take on the Rockhounds for three game beginning on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. RHP Alan Busenitz is slated to toe the rubber for the Travelers and will be opposed by RHP Jake Sanchez. You can catch all the action on The Sports Animal 920 AM or online at www.travs.com. The Travs' Home Opener is scheduled for Thursday, April 16th at 7:10 vs. Frisco. Tickets are on sale now!
