TULSA, OK - Hooks right-hander Lance McCullers and a trio of relievers teamed to blank Tulsa 4-0 Sunday afternoon at ONEOK Field. The first Corpus Christi shutout of the year runs the club's season-opening win streak to four games.
The Hooks jumped on Jeremy Kehrt four a couple runs in the second. With runners at first and second and no outs, Leo Heras hit a line drive into right field for a 1-0 advantage. Brandon Meredith was next and served a single into center, putting the Hooks in front 2-0.
Telvin Nash upped the edge in the third by belting a solo home run to left field. Nash's second homer in as many games gives him a Texas League leading seven RBIs.
Lance McCullers, making his Double-A debut, spread four hits and three walks over five innings to notch the win. The 41st overall selection in the 2012 draft struck out seven and threw 76 pitches.
McCullers' afternoon was capped by a fine defensive play. With two out in the fifth, Corey Seager seared a line drive into right field, chasing Daniel Mayora to third base. Seager was gunned down at second when Meredith and Tony Kemp relayed a throw to Carlos Correa who applied the tag.
Meredith added more offense in the sixth with a two-out RBI double down the right field line, scoring Heras from first base. Heras made a head-long dive at the plate to beat the play.
Travis Ballew entered in the sixth and promptly benefited from another outfield assist. Brandon Dixon tried to stretch his lead-off single into a double by was denied by a strong throw from Heras in left.
Ballew struck out three over two innings before yielding to Daniel Minor. The former Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islander worked around a lead-off walk in the eighth for a successful debut.
Tyson Perez closed out the win with a 1-2-3 ninth.
The series continues Monday with a 7:05 start. Mike Hauschild is slated to pitch for Corpus Christi. He will be opposed by Matt Shelton.
