Springfield Cardinals News Release

Springfield, MO - C Michael Ohlman delivered a go-ahead grand slam in the bottom of the seventh, catapulting the Springfield Cardinals to the 4-2 win against the San Antonio Missions before 3,050 fans at Hammons Field on Sunday evening.

Springfield LHP Kyle Hald and San Antonio RHP Elliot Morris traded 1-2-3 opening frames, before the Missions (1-3) swung in front in the top of the second. Leading off the inning, RF Hunter Renfroe took a Hald offering over the left field fence, lifting San Antonio into the 1-0 advantage.

Hald matched Morris with scoreless stanzas in the third and fourth, but a two-out rally by the Missions in the fifth doubled their lead. With two down and nobody on, Morris helped his own cause with a single to keep the frame going, before a walk by CF Travis Jankowski put two men on. SS Trea Turner then knocked an RBI single to bring in Morris and make it 2-0.

Morris, who was perfect on the mound through his first 3.2 innings, continued his no-hit bid through a scoreless fifth, before Springfield got its first knock in the sixth. Leading off the inning, pinch-hitting OF Nick Martini laced a single to right field, breaking up the no-hitter. Morris, however, worked around a walk to strand a pair in the scoreless frame, keeping the Missions ahead, 2-0.

With Morris relieved by RHP Casey Kelly (L, 0-1) to start the bottom of the seventh, the Cardinals (1-3) broke through. Patience started the rally with three consecutive walks worked by RF Breyvic Valera, 3B Patrick Wisdom and LF Anthony Garcia, loading the bases with no outs for C Michael Ohlman. Ohlman promptly delivered, crushing a grand slam over the left-center field fence for his first home run as a Cardinal, catapulting Springfield into the 4-2 lead.

Cardinals RHP Joey Donofrio (S, 1) took care of the Missions the rest of the way, dealing a pair of perfect innings to slam the door in the 4-2 win for Springfield. RHP Heath Wyatt (W, 1-0) tossed a scoreless seventh inning to register the win for the Cardinals.
