Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - Nick Travieso twirled six strong innings and eight different Dayton Dragons (18-15, 46-56) scored a run as they shutout the Lansing Lugnuts (10-22, 42-59), 8-0, in front of 8,258 fans at Cooley Law School Stadium on Thursday night.
The 19-year old Travieso (Win, 5-3) stymied the Lugnuts offense to the tune of six scoreless frames. Last year's 14th overall pick by the Cincinnati Reds allowed just three hits, striking out five while issuing just a single walk.
The Dragons' offense gave Travieso plenty of run support, scoring all eight of their runs in the first five innings.
Up 1-0 on a Jesse Winker RBI single in the first, Seth Mejias-Brean hit a controversial two-run homer to right-center in the third, Beau Amaral delivered an RBI single and Sammy Diaz provided a two-run sacrifice fly in the fourth, and Joe Hudson doubled in two runs in the fifth to cap the scoring.
Lansing starter Daniel Norris (Loss, 0-6) allowed six runs - all earned - on just five Dayton hits over 3.1 innings in the loss. The 20-year old Norris struck out six while issuing three walks.
In the losing cause, Lansing mustered just six hits - all singles - but two of them came from Emilio Guerrero and Jordan Leyland singled in the ninth for his first Midwest League hit.
Chad Girodo pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the Lugs and Matt Boyd, the Toronto Blue Jays' sixth round pick in the 2013 draft, pitched a scoreless eighth inning with a pair of strikeouts in his professional debut.
The series rubber match will be played Friday night on a Flat Screen Friday presented by Auto-Owners Insurance; eight flat screen TV's will be handed out over the course of the ballgame courtesy of Auto-Owners Insurance and following the game there will be a LAFCU Fireworks show. With first pitch set for 7:05 p.m., Lansing will send right-hander Kendall Graveman (0-0, 10.12) to the mound to face Dayton lefty Amir Garrett (0-1, 6.75).
Lansing Lugnuts tickets are available for purchase at lansinglugnuts.com and by calling 517-485-4500, and Lugnuts text alerts are easily accessed by texting LUGNUTS to 313131.
