Bees Hand Appel's River Bandits 5-2 Loss
July 25, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release
Mark Appel may have been the number one pick, but Tyler DeLoach looked like the first-rounder, tossing seven innings of two-run ball in a 5-2 win on Thursday night at Community Field.
The talk before Thursday night's game surrounded the Houston Astros' number one overall pick, Mark Appel. Appel struggled mightily with his control against the Burlington Bees, walking four in two innings. Tyler DeLoach continued to cruise with the Bees, holding the Quad Cities River Bandits to two runs on four hits in his seven innings. DeLoach, who struck out 12 in his last start, punched out nine this evening.
The Bees (13-19, 39-58) trailed 2-1 going into the fifth, but Wendell Soto made sure that DeLoach (5-2) was rewarded for his solid start. Soto came to the plate with two outs and two men on and ripped a triple to right-center off of Daniel Minor (7-2) that scored both Chevy Clarke and Riley Good. Clarke reached with two outs on a single, while Good kept the inning going on a walk. Good finished the night 2-for-3 with two singles.
DeLoach took that 3-2 lead and ran with it, retiring the final 12 batters he faced. Christopher O'Grady surrendered two infield singles with two outs in the eighth and was relieved by Cam Bedrosian. Bedrosian hit Jesse Wierzbicki to load the bases, but struck out Luis Alvarez to end the eighth. Wade Hinkle gave Bedrosian some insurance runs, blasting a two-run home run for his 11th long ball of the year. Bedrosian worked a perfect ninth, striking out two more for his fourth save.
The Bees took an early lead against Appel in the first. Sherman Johnson walked and advanced to second on a passed ball. After Garrett Cannizaro walked, Wade Hinkle grounded into a fielder's choice, which put runners at the corners with one out. Michael Bolaski hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Johnson.
The Bandits (55-45, 17-14) quickly answered in the second. DeLoach hit Alvarez with one out and allowed a single to Terrell Joyce. Roberto Pena fouled out for the second out of the frame, but Brian Blasik ripped a two-run double to put the Bandits ahead 2-1.
Burlington and Quad Cities will square off in the rubber match of the series on Friday evening. Ryan Crowley will pitch for the Bees, while Vincent Velasquez will toe the rubber for the River Bandits. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Community Field.
