Travieso, 3 Relievers Combine for 8-0 Shutout Win

Lansing, Mich.-Dayton starting pitcher Nick Travieso and three relievers combined on a six-hit shutout as the Dragons defeated the Lansing Lugnuts 8-0 on Thursday night. It was the fourth shutout win of the year for the Dragons, who evened the series at one win apiece. The Dragons will try to win their sixth straight series on Friday in the rubber match of the three-game set.

Cincinnati Reds outfielder Ryan Ludwick again got three plate appearances as the Dragons designated hitter as he continued his Major League injury rehabilitation assignment. Ludwick reached on catcher's interference, walked, and grounded out hard to third. He also scored a run.

Travieso (5-3) worked the first six innings, allowing three hits with one walk and five strikeouts to win his second straight start. Relievers Alejandro Chacin, Joey Housey, and Michael Lorenzen each tossed a scoreless inning.

The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Jesse Winker's RBI single after Sammy Diaz doubled. Seth Mejias-Brean hit a two-run home run to right-center field in the third, his seventh of the year, to make it 3-0. The Dragons added three more in the fourth inning. Beau Amaral's run-scoring single make it 4-0, and Sammy Diaz followed with deep fly out to center that easily scored Zach Vincej from third. On the same play, Amaral raced around to score from second to make it a two-run sacrifice fly and give the Dragons a 6-0 lead. In the fifth, Joe Hudson's two-run double closed out the scoring.

The Dragons finished with nine hits. Amaral and Rahier each had two. Mejias-Brean extended his hitting streak to nine straight games with his home run.

The Dragons battle the Lugnuts on Friday at 7:05 pm. to close out the series. Amir Garrett (0-1, 6.75) will make his second start for Dayton against Lansing's Kendall Graveman (0-0, 10.12). The Dragons return home to Fifth Third Field to begin a three-game series with the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at daytondragons.com and wone.com.
