CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Peoria Chiefs defeated the Kernels for a second straight game, 8-3, on Thursday night. Peoria took the lead in the 7th with three runs and would hold on for the victory.
The Kernels struck first with one run in the bottom of the 3rd. Jeremias Pineda led off with a bunt single, Jonathan Murphy advanced Pineda to third with a ground out to second, and then Jorge Polanco singled home Pineda.
One inning later, Max Kepler and Travis Harrison led off with back-to-back singles. Joel Licon drove both teammates home with a double in the left center gap, which gave the Kernels a 3-0 lead.
Peoria narrowed the deficit in the 5th, scoring two runs. Gerwuins Velazco registered an RBI ground out to push across Ildemaro Vargas and C.J. McElroy followed with an RBI single to score Trevor Martin.
The Chiefs recorded their largest inning in the 7th, however. Velazco and McElroy singled, and then facing an 0-2 count with 2 outs, Jacob Wilson powered a 3-run home run as Peoria took a 5-3 lead.
A 2-RBI single by McElroy in the 8th, which pushed the Chiefs' lead to 7-3, followed a trio of walks and a single. Valera recorded an RBI on a fielders choice in the 8th, pushing the lead to 8-3.
Kernels starter Josue Montanez threw a career high 7 innings. The left-hander allowed five runs on 10 hits while walking one and striking out one. Dallas Gallant followed out of the bullpen, recording just two outs while allowing two runs on two hits to go along with three walks. Alex Muren pitched 1.1 innings, allowing one run.
Chiefs starter Ben O'Shea exited after facing two batters in the 7th, allowing three runs on 10 hits in 6 innings. The left-hander didn't walk a batter and struck out three. Joe Scanio threw 2 hitless and scoreless innings in relief, striking out four. Dixon Llorens pitched a scoreless 9th.
