Philadelphia Union News Release
CHESTER, Pa.- Philadelphia Union have announced Swiss midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta will return to FC St. Gallen at season's end where he began his professional career, after appearing in 37 matches since signing on with Philadelphia Union on July 29, 2015.
"The entire soccer community here was so welcoming, and I'm so thankful to everyone at Philadelphia Union for making me feel so appreciated." Barnetta said. "Playing in front of my friends and family and making plans for life at the end of my career where I want to live is a force I can't resist."
In his 37 matches Barnetta has recorded six goals while earning seven assists. Additionally, Barnetta had extensive experience in the German Bundesliga where he made 260 league appearances in his career. Playing for Schalke 04 from 2012-15, he made 60 total appearances and had three goals. Barnetta has made 75 appearances for the Swiss National Team, most recently on Oct. 14, 2014 in an European Cup qualifier against San Marino. He's been a member on each of Switzerland's last three World Cup teams, including playing key roles in 2006 and 2010.
"Tranquillo has been a key piece in what we're trying to build here in Philadelphia, but we appreciate his decision to return to Switzerland," Union Sporting Director Earnie Stewart said. "We look forward to continuing to push for the postseason."
