Hickory Crawdads News Release
ASHEVILLE, NC - The Asheville Tourists took back-to-back wins against the Hickory Crawdads in Saturday's doubleheader -- 8-7 in Game One and 10-6 in Game Two -- before 2,620 fans at Historic McCormick Field in Asheville.
Game One:
The Crawdads (19-19) swung out to an early lead in the top of the first against RHP Chris Jensen (W, 4-1). With CF Chris Grayson on at third base and one away, 3B Drew Robinson launched a two-run homer over the right field wall for the 2-0 lead.
The Tourists (25-15), though, responded in the bottom of the first against LHP Will Lamb (L, 0-4). With the bases loaded, all on walks, and one away, C Will Swanner connected with a grand slam to center field, catapulting the Tourists to the 4-2 advantage.
After the Tourists added a run in the bottom of the third, the 'Dads inched back closer in the top of the fourth. With two away, LF Zach Cone doubled to extend the frame, and then raced home on an RBI single by RF Jeremy Williams, cutting it to a 5-3 Asheville lead.
The Tourists stretched the lead back out in the top of the fourth. With two on and two down, LF David Kandilas drove in both runners with a two-run single. After a stolen base and a walk, Kandilas then came home from second on an RBI base hit by 1B Harold Riggins, making it 8-3.
Hickory raced right back in the game in the top of the sixth inning. 2B Rougned Odor led off with a solo bomb, cutting the deficit to 8-4. One out later, Williams doubled his way to scoring position before scoring on an RBI single by C Kevin Torres. After a fly out retired the second out in the frame, Grayson singled to keep the inning going. Both runners moved up to second and third on a passed ball, and then both scored on a throwing error charged to SS Rosell Herrera during his attempt to retire SS Luis Sardinas, bringing the 'Dads within one run of tying it, 8-7.
However, the Tourists escaped the sixth with the lead intact, and then RHP Jefri Hernandez (S, 2) dealt a 1-2-3 seventh for the 8-7 Asheville win.
Game Two:
The Crawdads (19-20) again jumped in front in the top of the first inning, this time against RHP Geoff Parker. With one away, SS Hanser Alberto belted a solo home run for the game's first tally. One out later, RF Zach Cone singled to extend the inning for 2B Rougned Odor, who rocketed an RBI double off the right-field wall to score Cone. DH Jeremy Williams followed with an RBI infield single, bringing in Odor for the 3-0 lead.
However, Asheville (26-15) again came right back in the bottom of the first. Facing RHP Jerad Eickhoff (L, 4-4), the Tourists managed six runs on five hits with two Crawdads errors in the big opening inning, leap-frogging the 'Dads on the scoreboard, 6-3.
After a DH Sam Mende solo home run in the second tacked another run onto the Tourists lead, Hickory started chipping away in the top of the third. Alberto reached on an error with one out, before 3B Drew Robinson crushed another two-run home run to bring the 'Dads within two runs, 7-5.
Asheville received another solo shot, this time by CF Delta Cleary, Jr. in the bottom of the fourth, stretching the lead to 8-5. The 'Dads came one run closer in the top of the sixth inning. Cone doubled to start the frame and moved to third on a grounder by Odor. Williams then brought in Cone with a sacrifice fly, making it 8-6.
The Tourists added a pair of late insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double by SS Trevor Story and an RBI single by DH Harold Riggins, accounting for the eventual final score of 10-6 in the Asheville victory.
