Hagerstown, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (19-22) scored three runs in the third inning and never looked back in a 9-1 victory over the Hagerstown Suns (23-16) on Saturday night at Municipal Stadium. Miguel Chalas and Jake Cowan held one of the best offenses in the South Atlantic League to one run on five hits.
The Shorebirds jumped on Suns starter Taylor Hill in the third. Mychal Givens, who went 3-for-4, hit a line drive to right field to open the inning. Then, Sammie Starr tripled down left field to score Givens. Glynn Davis followed with a triple to right field to give the Shorebirds a 2-0 lead. Kyle Hoppy hit a grounder to second that scored Davis to increase the lead to 3-0.
In the fourth, Givens hit a two-out single through the left side of the infield to score Brenden Webb, who got on base with a single.
The Suns scored their lone run in the fifth inning. With two outs, Caleb Ramsey singled. Then, Brian Goodwin doubled to plate Ramsey.
In the seventh inning, the Shorebirds exploded for four runs to take a commanding 8-1 lead. Davis reached on a fielder's choice and stole his team best 13th base. Then, Hoppy walked to put two runners aboard. Nicky Delmonico then crushed a line drive homer over the right field wall to give the 'Birds an 8-1 lead. On the next pitch, Justin Dalles blasted a solo home run well beyond the left field wall to increase the lead to 8-1.
The Shorebirds added another run in the ninth inning on a double through the right-center field gap by Jason Esposito, who finished a home run shy of the cycle.
Miguel Chalas earned his staff high fourth win of the season. He went six innings, a season long, and allowed just four hits and one run. Jake Cowan entered in the seventh and yielded just one hit over the final three innings.
The Shorebirds totaled 13 hits. Esposito and Givens each had three while Delmonico and Dalles each had two.
