Hickory Crawdads News Release
ASHEVILLE, NC - The Asheville Tourists edged the 1st-Half Northern Division Champion Hickory Crawdads, 10-9, before 2,157 fans at Historic McCormick Field on Monday night.
The Crawdads (65-47, 25-19) struck first with an RBI grounder by 1B Andrew Clark in the top of the first, but the Tourists came right back with two runs in the bottom of the frame against RHP Joe Van Meter. Hickory pulled even in the second, when LF Josh Richmond got on with a single and raced all the way home on an RBI triple by C Kellin Deglan, tying it at 2-2.
Asheville (56-57, 25-19) opened up a four-run lead with three homers in the bottom of the second. 3B Joey Wong hit a solo shot to lead off the inning, followed later in the frame by a two-run homer from 2B Brett Tanos and a solo bomb by 1B Helder Velazquez, lifting the Tourists in front, 6-2.
CF Jake Skole belted the first pitch of the top of the third over the right field wall for a solo home run, but Asheville struck for three more runs, all unearned, against LHP Kevin Johnson in the bottom of the fourth to open a 9-3 advantage.
Hickory raced all the way back with six runs in the top of the seventh against LHP Josh Hungerman and LHP Kraig Sitton (W, 7-1). Skole sparked the rally with a single, followed by a walk from pinch-hitter DH Braxton Lane. 1B Andrew Clark then emptied the bases with a towering three-run home run over the right field wall, cutting it down to 9-6. 3B Christian Villanueva got a man right back on base, working a walk that led to Sitton taking over on the hill. 2B Alejandro Selen singled Villanueva to second, but was then retired on a fielder's choice hit into by Richmond, putting runners at the corners with one away. Deglan bounced an RBI grounder to second, before RF Jhonny Gomez tied it, 9-9, with a two-run bomb over the center field wall.
LHP Jimmy Reyes (L, 6-1) took over on the mound for the Crawdads to start the bottom of the seventh. After Reyes retired the first batter, Tanos struck again with the go-ahead solo home run, which would be the final blow of the game, lifting the Tourists to the eventual 10-9 victory.
