TOURISTS LET ONE SLIP AWAY LATE
INTIMIDATORS SCORE TWO IN THE NINTH, WIN 2-1
ASHEVILLE- The Asheville Tourists were one out away from victory on Monday night. Asheville led the Kannapolis Intimidators 1-0 with two outs in the ninth inning; however, Kannapolis rallied for a pair of runs and stunned the Tourists by a final score of 2-1.
The lone run scored through the game's first eight innings was on a Home Run by Ramon Marcelino in the second. Asheville's starting pitcher, Garrett Schilling was absolutely dominant. The Xavier University product pitched seven shutout innings against the league's top offense and struck out five without walking a batter.
Schilling departed and Ben Bowden tossed a shut down eighth inning. Tommy Doyle came in to try and close out Kannapolis. After retiring the first two batters of the frame, Doyle surrendered a single and a walk. With runners at first and second, Luis Gonzalez hit a chopper out in front of home plate. Asheville's catcher picked up the ball and threw to first to try and end the game.
Unfortunately, the throw sailed high and Nolan Brown raced in from second to score. The next batter for the Intimidators grounded an RBI single into right. Asheville went down in order in the bottom of the ninth.
The Tourists had two great opportunities to add to their lead; once in the sixth and again in the eighth. Asheville loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth and put two on with no one out in the eighth. Both times the Tourists came away empty handed.
Asheville will attempt to salvage one game in the series with Tuesday's Education Day scheduled for 10:35am.
